As the title says...eating healthily on campus? I'm thinking of those snacks or days where you forget your lunch. How healthy IS the Buttery/Hamilton canteen food? I'm trying to go a little lower-carb after Christmas, so here I come, looking for suggestions. :)

In my experience it's not great, but then my choices are limited by a large range of food allergies which mean I can't eat most things on the menu. I tend to frequent the local centra on Westland Row more than eating in either the Buttery or the Hamilton.

That said, the Buttery menu and ambience has improved greatly this year, with many more options - in particular I like the pasta dishes. Not sure about the low carb options though...

My advice is: don't bother with the buttery, it's convenient but a rip-off. You can get a low-calorie/high energy pitta sandwich filled with hummus/tofu/falafel & beansprout at Blazing Salads on Drury St (back entrance of Georges St Arcade). Sets me back €3.75 - as somebody who was in this position last year (ie. i wanted to stop eating chips & beans but not pay €5 a pop for the privilege) and went about finding a better/cheaper alternative to college, I can tell you this place is the best you're gonna find. Of course, if you hate vegan food it'll be a problem. That said, I'm not even vegan but I love it.

Nice...if only it weren't so inconviently located (Especially when you're down the East End) but that looks worth a shot..

I was just thinking the same thing - sounds good, but so far away from the hamilton end. There's a few nice places around that area, but if you only have an hour for lunch...

Bolands is a good spot for Sambo's. It located between Grafton and Dawson Street up a side street opposite the side entrance of M&S. Think the street is called Duke Lane (guess it‘s not a street…). Rolls/ Sandwiches are between 2.80 and 4 yo-yo's so it's a good buy. Lots of choice, friendly staff, and good soups, wedges, and other snacks etc well recommended.

if you want to eat healthily and cheaply go for soup even in expensive places its not too much.... anywhere from 2.50 to 4.50

Lunch do some very tasty decent food - expensive end of things though. There is however one at each end of college now though.

Marks and Spencers, admitedly on the pricey end but easy enough for getting a lower carb intake sorted out. Also start bringing fruit in with you. Fruit is soo annoyingly expensive in town.

Any fruit and veg that can be easily purchased in town is of awful, AWFUL quality.

According to this website, there's one on Westland Row and one on Lombard Street. The one on Lombard Street is definitely there, not sure about Westland Row :)

Lombard St., - basically the continuation of westland row after it hits pearse st.
