The 40D isn't out that long so I'd say any upgrade would be at least 12 months away*

    * as I do not have a clue about these things that may be untrue :)

Thanks cabaal, I will drop it over to you in a very very long time!

Always buy from Onestop, never had any bad experiences with them and considering I just gave them €3k they probably won't ever. Very, very helpful bunch !

The 40D has enough in it to keep you going for a long time. You'll have no reason to regret the modest spending on such a great camera.

Fionn, I'd say we need to start laying the smack down on this situation. Mods, can we make referring to tax & import duty an offense? :D

    Ordered

    3 days to arrive (apparently)

I agree - but talking about tax avoidance is perfectly legal... tax evasion is the big no-no.

aha.... so just to clear it up for anyone that's not been paying attention..
    evade
    (ĭ-vād') pronunciation

    v., e·vad·ed, e·vad·ing, e·vades.

    v.tr.

    1. To escape or avoid by cleverness or deceit: evade arrest.
    2.
    1. To avoid fulfilling, answering, or performing: evade responsibility. See synonyms at escape.
    2. To fail to make payment of (taxes).
    3. To avoid giving a direct answer to.
    4. To baffle or elude: The accident evades explanation.

    v.intr.

    1. To practice evasion.
    2. To use cleverness or deceit in avoiding or escaping.

[French évader, from Latin ēvādere : ē-, ex-, ex- + vādere, to go.]

    Is bad mmmkay?

    But on the other hand;
    avoid
    (ə-void') pronunciation

    tr.v., a·void·ed, a·void·ing, a·voids.

    1. To stay clear of; shun. See synonyms at escape.
    2. To keep from happening: avoid illness with rest and a balanced diet.
    3. Law. To annul or make void; invalidate.
    4. Obsolete. To void or expel.

[Middle English avoiden, from Anglo-Norman avoider, to empty out, variant of Old French esvuidier : es-, out (from Latin ex-; see ex–) + vuidier, to empty (from voide, empty; see void).]

Is perfectly acceptable... Got it.. great. On with the topic at hand.

    Why haven't I seen this?

Lads, don't talk about dodging the taxmen here - Read the charter ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,070 ✭✭✭Placebo

i was waking down the road and irish tax man charged me tax for BREATHING.
    no thanxs

in serious news, whats the tax on something weighing an average slr.
i ordered something heavier from the states

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭cheerspal

Im not sure if your joking, but isnt it the value rather than the weight?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,272 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

It's purely down to the value and nothing to do with weight. Value of the item + shipping costs.

It's on value and also type of good...

lenses don't get duty charged but bodies do... 8% difference or something like that (20% being the base rate I think)

It's all pretty confusing in my eyes - here's the website I found after almost an hour of reading through legislation etc.

    http://www.revenue.ie/index.htm?/faqs/faq_cat5.htm

It's the other way around. Digital bodies are zero rated for duty and a lens is subject to 6.7% duty. Don't forget to add 21% vat on top of this and all taxes are calculated on the value of the goods plus any shipping costs.

I Dont see that anywhere , what I do see is an index here ,

    http://www.revenue.ie/index.htm?/services/tax_info/vatrate/vatrate.htm

And in all cases cameras and photographic equipment are listed as 21% , only in special cases , such as photographic services is the rate dropped to 13.5%.

21% is the VAT rate. Import duty is something else altogether. AFAIK, digital bodies are exempt from duty except for those that can record video.
