Think I'm gonna order me one of these. Don't use my laptop for much apart from browsing, downloading large files and just organising my media library onto different mp3 players and hard drives, maybe just writing the odd essay if i go back to college. So no need to order anything fancy. Absolutely no interest in gaming (have a 360 for that), can't really think of anything else I'd use it for. Certainly not on a regular basis anyway.

So thinking of ordering this for €513 incl. vat and delivery.

    BASE: AMD® Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL60 edit
OPERATING SYSTEM: Genuine Windows Vista® Business - English edit
HARDWARE SUPPORT: Base Warranty - 1 Year Business Hardware Support edit
    LCD: 15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display with TrueLife™ edit
    MEMORY: 2048 MB 667MHz Dual-Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x 1024 MB) edit
HARD DRIVE: 120GB (5400rpm) SATA Hard Drive edit
GRAPHICS CARD: ATI Radeon® Xpress 1150 HyperMemory (integrated) edit
OPTICAL DRIVE: Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive including Software edit
PRIMARY BATTERY: 9 cell Lithium-Ion Battery (85 Whr)

No extras, no microsoft office. The only thing it doesn't have that I'd want is bluetooth.

Just 2 main questions about it. If you can customize all the components yourself, what is the difference between a Vostro 1000 and 1500 with almost indentical components?

And just about the processor, what are amd's like? The 1500's only come with intel chips. Are they better or are you paying extra for the name?

My current laptop is an Inspiron 1100 and is a piece of sh*t. Overheats and runs very slowly, even after I wiped it and do the bare minimum on it. Just want any new laptop to be able to do the basics, but to do them well.

The Vostro 1000 is basically a Black Insprion 6000/6400 model, not a new chassis design. The Vostro 1500 is a newly designed chassis so looks different. The specs you give look fine for eveything you want to do and I would think that for the price you give you should be quite happy with the specs!

I have one of those, same specs as yourself.. fantastic value and the battery life on the 9 cell... over 7 hours!!!

Cool. Gonna go ahead and order this. Does the 9 cell battery stick out far from the back of the laptop?

My mum and my sister have the same laptop with the same spec. They would be doing similar stuff as you and it is perfect for what they need.

I think the 9 cell battery will stick out a bit. Someone posted pictures of it a while back and it didn't look like it was all that much. It wouldn't be something that would annoy me.

Does anyone else have the following problem with the Vostro 1000.

Mine is brand new with Vista Business and AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL60.

The fan comes on quite often and when it does it does not stay constant. There is a definite rising and lowering of ptch at about 1 second inervals. This is enough to really annoy, not only me but the others in my office. if it would only stay steady when it comes on that would be great.

We also have the same computer but running XP and the fan noise is so steady you hardly notice it is on at all.

Its hardly an OS issue, but i'd like to see if anyone else notices their fan changeing pitch from second to second when it comes on.

It is annoying enough to stopp us buying any others.
