Almost two dozen Romanians have been arrested after police swooped on a child slave gang operating in Britain.

In a scheme reminiscent of the devious Fagin training child thieves in the Charles Dickens novel 'Oliver Twist', children had been forced to steal and beg on London streets and on public transport.

Six children aged under 10 were rescued in pre-dawn raids and taken into care, Scotland Yard said.

Unconfirmed reports claim that many more child slaves may be involved.

There have been many cases of poverty-stricken parents in Romania selling their children for financial reward, with Romanian authorities believing that up to 2000 smuggled children are currently living in Britain.

Police estimate that each child is worth up to $225,000 a year to the gangs, with most funds being funnelled back to Romanian crime syndicates.

Hundreds of police from forces in England and Romania were involved in the operation, codenamed Caddy, at several addresses in Slough, west London.

Officers in riot gear and supported by police dogs raided the homes in the run-down area, using a sledgehammer to burst through one front door.

Authorities believe they have smashed a major operation, which trafficked young Eastern European children into Britain to steal, beg, pick pockets and target consumers at ATMs on the streets of London.

Commander Steve Allen, who led the operation, said more arrests were expected.

"While many of these crimes committed appear to be low level, we have evidence that organised crime networks are exploiting and driving the most vulnerable members of their own community," he said in a statement.

"With promises of a financial return, some poor families surrender their children who are subsequently forced to commit crime."

Since Romania joined the EU in January last year, Romanian crime in Britain has increased by more than 700 per cent.

Certainly wouldn't be surprised if this sort of thing is going on in Ireland. We've all seen or heard about the gypsies throwing you their 'babies' then robbing you blind. Is this the new scheme?

Ah but they aren't babies. It's a doll wrapped in a blanket. They just throw it to you, grab whatever you have then do a burner

Sometimes it's not even a doll, just a big bundle of cloth (one of the roma was rather clumsy when she came to my door while begging).
