Ok lads, i know its 2 days earlier than normal but we need to get sorted for this one as we only had 10 fit players playing the last night, which is not acceptable. if we are in the same boat, then we need to make alternatives this week. so, who is in? another reason is, I know we have injuries/exams/sickness/holidays/work commitments, so we are missing a few this week too and possibly over the next few weeks too.

All the best with this one lads, still have the chance of finishing the season 11 games unbeaten to fight for and are still in with a shout of a medal spot so plenty to fight for. Hopefully there's a decent turnout.

Would anybody be driving through town heading to this match?

I have a much stronger chance of being able to make it if i dont have to goto the bother of getting and dropping my car back to the parking space (time is of the essence in exam periods!)

only 4 confirmed at the moment. missing martin and dave from last week. i probably wont be playing either, so we are going to be short, maybe its only possible that we have 12 or 13 available.

this isnt ideal considering we havent lost since november.

What's our cut off time then, before we ask mates to play? In fairness to the 2 lads who came out last week, we'd have been fecked without them turning up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41,926 ✭✭✭✭_blank_

Just remember lads, a LOT of the team don't post here.

I uaually send a text this afternoon, so I'll so that later and we'll see.

I'll say that I want a reponse by say 3 tomorrow, and if you don't respond, then we'll be getting mates to play, and any late responders aren't guaranteed a place.

    Fair?

    Howya lads,

I've buggered up my knee again last week (as well as my wrist and ribs) so I wont be there. Judging by how many games are left in the season I might have to take "early retirement" this season cos I dont know if I'll be back for any of them :(

6 and a half players confirmed. Crazy.
Let's assume Carl's ok because he always is, we're still miles short of what we need.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,346 ✭✭✭✭homerjay2005

i have a mate from work coming. he is really interested in playing next season, so he is coming to have a look and try out. he has just moved up to dublin from cork and was asking about playing 11 a side astro. he was captain of the team that won division 1 in cork last year.

so thats another player to the list but this is a joke, des send that text please asap. people should be texting back by this evening, forget 3.00 tomorrow, thats too late. we thought we had 13 last week and we ended up struggling to get 10. we need to sort this tonight!

looking at the list, we have no right full back yet and we are very short in defence....only geoff and michael confirmed, hopefully cathal and lepo can make it 4 defenders anyway, whats story with simon???

Not going to be able to make it now (not that I was fit to play, so I guess it doesn't make a difference!).

Still would have been nice to catch up with everyone again. Hopefully see ye next week, good luck tonight!

All the hairy breast tonight lads - assuming Carl will be there that's not a bad squad at all at all so hopefully their keeper is in for a busy night

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,346 ✭✭✭✭homerjay2005

i dont know jules, i think we are a bit short....no rb and missing a few key players. defensively we are very short. lets hope all these lads turn up, not like last week!!!!!!!!

missing from our regulars from the last 6 games -

    martin
    Simon
    Darran
    Ed

    Shay
    Dave
    Jules

add in long term absentees darragh and colm!

thats 9 players like ffs!im carrying my gear anyway, i maybe worth an old punt upfront with 5 left....thats about my limit i think!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,032 ✭✭✭FrankGrimes

think Des made some updates since I posted that - think it looked like Simon, shay and maybe dave were all still in at that stage. yeh it looks a little tighter now, but the players that will be there have it in them if it goes right on the night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭Gileadi

I had to pull out, as the day went on i realised i was in serious danger of failing an exam that goes towards the degree so was forced to make a decision :(,

Im back to normal after this week though so i can go back to dossing and making it to matches again

lost 1-0. not one player played well, but these things happen. we made mistake after mistake. we had all the play in the first half but couldnt get the ball on target and didnt really work their keeper. they scored the jammiest goal ever, less said about that the better.

from then on in, we created little. infact, i may be wrong but gavs shot with about 3 minutes left was our first proper shot on target, their keeper made a great save. likewise, i thought that chance at the end was in, but the keeper pulled off an even better save from right on the line. these things happen, we have to learn from this, true we were missing players, but we were all over the place and our new formation meant that about 6 players were playing in roles that they have not been used to playing in.

a bad night, everything went wrong, loosing dan after 2 minutes didnt help either. we just have to move on.

hopefully we will have a few more players back next week cos we have dropped 5 points in the past week, surely this has something to do with missing key players.

No doubt. Zero complaints here we were the cause of our own downfall...

Nobody posting so allow me to get the discussion moving. This is just rolling around me head.

I think in the last 2 games, which have been a real struggle, we have not benefitted from a functioning partnership in the middle of the park. Injuries and absenteesim aside, I think I would've liked to see us leave the 2 Centre Mid positions alone. Yes there are 10 players who can play there and yes we are down to the bare bones squad-wise, but it's probably the most important position on the pitch. This, along with a solid Centre Half pairing, is the backbone of any decent team IMHO. It didn't help that we lost Ed early last week and Dan this week, if you ask me it took us bloody ages to get our shape back and there were times in both the last games we were completely all over the place and half the time I had honestly no idea who was playing where. Wingers in the Centre, Strikers out wide, everytime I thought someone was playing in one position it turned out they were actually playing somewhere else. You cannot get any positional sense when you don't know where anybody is.

This is not something we've been guilty of very often, in fact our general shape is one of our stronger points, but for whatever reasons it seems like it's all gone to crap. Looking around the team yesterday the term "headless chicken" came to mind, sorry if that sounds harsh but I'm just rambling here for the purpose of conversation :D

The system that suits us the most is keeping a solid central line while rotating wingers and frontmen, not shifting around the pitch like musical chairs. I dunno if some of the instructions from the sideline are getting lost in translation or whether some fellas just taking things into their own hands and going roaming

FWIW I have no real bones about playing Centre Mid so long as I know who's beside me, that's the only way you get any kind of understanding going, more often than not this can click into gear the more the game goes on. For example, I found playing alongside Kenny to be completely different to playing alongside Dan in CM. Dan's a great ballwinner, so you have to stick close to him to pick up those loose balls whereas Kenny knows how to spread a pass so I know I could drift a bit. I personally felt that as soon as we were in the ascendancy (Martin O'Neill TM) and getting our shape we either got stung with an injury or else we lost our footballing brain, I can't quite pinpoint which, maybe a bit of both.

For the record, I'm not saying we coulda done any better last week against Trinity, when you can barely field 11 you just have to go with whatever you have. But this week's game there was really no excuse, we had a fair few first teamers back.

Just my thoughts, feel free to chime in one and all, don't be shy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,346 ✭✭✭✭homerjay2005

spot on, i totally agree with the point that nobody seemed to know where they were playing. lets hope we all learn from it and we regain the composure that we had in the last 6 games. lets keep it simple and try have everybody play in the positions that they are good in.hopefully next week we have 4 or 5 of our stronger players back which should give us a solid base and allow us to have players in key postions that they are used to.

as regards injuries, i should be able to play more that the 5 minutes i played last week hopefully, may try manage a half but i wont be able to kick the ball fully for about 2-3 weeks, my groin is torn and has been for 5 weeks now. dan is 50/50 as he is sporting 2 black eyes, but is able to breath normally, so his nose is mending!

Jules, dave, martin, simon, shay, darran???you all back this week?

then you shouldn't play. I know you're trying to help the team but you're not doing yourself or the team any favours by playing when you're not fit. Whether you realise it or not on a subconcious level you won't be giving 100% because you will automatically try and protect yourself.

Combine that with the likelihood of aggravating your injury and missing more games than you would by resting and you can see it's only leading one way. Your commitment is without question, but sometimes that means stepping back and trusting in others.

Sounds like a **** performance all round. Bit unlucky with holidays, exams, etc robbing us of a few players. We play trinity and dodgers again. Have to win both of those to show them they didn't play us at our best

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,032 ✭✭✭FrankGrimes

From talking to Gav & Kenny, it sounds like a very frustrating game with them sitting 10 men behind the ball most of the time, Probably even more frustrating that it seems we would well beat them with a full team.

Things like losing shape, understanding and frequent changes are inevitable when you're unfortunately missing 10 from the squad, with probably 5 regular starters - any team would suffer due to that to some extent and any manager would naturally try to chop and change things to suit what's available.

So, no chance of winning the league, but still plenty to play for to finish the league on an upward trend. 4 wins would give us 37 points, which is a respectable total, but we should definitely push on from there.

Can't wait for the game on Tuesday - FWH just stuff them 8-2 last week. Our first focus is just on the 3 points, but its not hard to tell we'll be looking to prove we're far better than Trinity with close to our full strength team available.
