I play a bit of guitar on my acoustic but want to get an electric. i like to play Kings of Leon, Placebo, Muse etc

I love the Fender Jaguar - but my budget only goes to about 350max, soi was looking at this:

    http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_squier_jagmaster_upgrade_rw_sb.htm

Is this any use? Can anyone recommend something else decent for around that price?

My brother has a Ephiphone SG that hes selling, but im not mad about it, although I might buy it of him him still. What do yis thing of the Ephiphone SG400?

Epiphones are great for beginners you should have it for a long time. You can pick up some Epiphone Les Pauls for about €250 in the buyandsell kid. Nothing wrong with that.

How about some packs from www.gak.co.uk
They have a huge amount of gear and don't rip you off for delivery.

Also Dolphin.co.uk have a good selection of Mexican Fenders at very reasonable prices....a little over your budget, but the Sterling is a bit weaker than ever, so now would be a good time to buy from the UK.

Let us know how you get on. :)

+1, you can get really good deals on epi pauls
and for your budget they are a good bet

i got an epi goldtop LP on adverts and its a sweet guitar,
i also have a japanese fender jazzmaster and its a class above the epi

if you can snag a japanese fender jazzmaster or jaguar off ebay
in your budget that woud be a winner!

having said that, the epi is a more realistic option, hold out and you
will get one for around 200 on adverts

eBay can be a fairly good place for picking up a used guitar. I got a standard strat with custom pickups in as new condition for €400 last year, and I have seen standard models for as low as €250. I think they are a great versatile guitar.

Was looking at a Telecaster on Thomann:

    http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_lite_ash_telecaster_mn_blk.htm?partner_id=25293

Its just a bit over my budget but i could possibly stretch to it. Anyone know if this could be got cheaper or what do yis think of it? A good guitar?

I do play guitar a bit but have always just been happy with my acoustic and nowI want an electric cos i got a decent amp.

Would prefer a cheaper second hand one so will keep an eye in buyandsell and adverts

I would love a Jag more than anything though - just cant afford it though!

Nice...that would be a nice addition.
The only thing about that one is it has 2 single coils instead of humbuckers.
Single coil pickups won't give you that full overdrive/distortion you might need for the bands you like.

Try the same model with a humbucker in the bridge position.

its time for the standard reply....!

you need to go into town and doss on guitars for a day

Epi LP's, tele's, jags and jazzes are all nice guitars
but they play and sound completely different

I have an Epi LP, a tele and a jazzmaster and they are all different
there is no one trick pony as such

Watch out for the jaguar, it has a very short scale neck

make sure you like the look of them too!
i have bought nice playing, good sounding guitars
but wasnt sure about the look of them,
    where are they now? sold!

Thats why i wont go for an EPi Les Paul, dont like the look at all, same goes for the Fender Strat.

Love the SG and had an Epi SG 400 for a while but there was something about it I didnt like, maybe that was just a bad one. Love the telecaster to - never realised that it had 2 single coils, i defo want one with a humbucker instead of 2 single coils - Placebo, Kings of leon, Muse all use a lot of distortion.

    dont discount single coil distortion!
a lot of great distortions are from single coils
(hendrix, strokes, dinosaur jr, radiohead, to name a few)

single coil distortion tends to sound dirtier/grungier
whereas bucker distortions tend to be smoother

the argument for single coils is that the are much more earthy
and without doubt sound better clean and crunchy than buckers (IMO)

another point is that if you buy a bucker guitar
you could then install a p-90 type (single coil on steroids) in the neck
and still have a bucker in the bridge
which is a really cool sound!

Wy does noone ever listen when i say yamaha pacifica. Will outplay and outlast any poxy epiphone or squier. I still play mine a hell of a lot, sometimes even over my other guitars costing 3 times the amount.

Lovely neck, sound, look, has both humbers and singlecoils, reliable and cheap enough. Its perfect for the begginer player. Get one of these and a microcube and dont let anyone tell you any better!!

Agreed, played my mate's for the first time in ages (single coils in neck and middle, humbucker in the bridge) and it had the nicest action I've felt in ages.

Didn't play it through an amp but I remember it sounding damn good!

On the Pacifica, i got one as a Christmas present, wasn't expecting it (was expecting a microcube.......I know I know the ungrateful bollox that I am) But it's a very nice guitar to play. Miles ahead of my first guitar[some cheap Aria].

The lads are probably referring to the pacifica 112. I have the same (x2). They are fabalous guitars and are famous for their playability. Recommended!;)
