Frogs... mating season?

I've seen some frogs coming out to mate in the last couple of days.
Is this not very early, or is my memory playing tricks on me? I remember it happening at the beginning of March after a cold spell 3 years ago (cos they kept me awake all night).

It's usually February / March time. The last few days have been relatively warm compared to recent weeks, so maybe they got triggered by that?

i found a dead frog on saturday morning in a friend's garden - one of two known frogs in the garden (one has three legs, so is easy to distinguish them).
the one i found seemed to have a bruised belly, and was otherwise unmarked.

I'd say that's spot on. I saw activity up near the Wicklow Gap on Saturday. Even at that altitude the weather was mild. If the spawn gets hit by a cold snap though...

It is that time of year alright. If you have seen any frogs, or spawn, etc then i would appreciate it if you could log onto my website, www.irishmammals.ie and log the sighting.

We have 3 clumps of frogspawn here in Newmarket, Co. Cork. About 5 days earlier than last year.

I only spotted it Friday a bog pool is full of frogspawn and about eight or more frogs in the pool too. You want to see as fast as the frogs heads disappeared under the water when I came along...

I was in north Mayo a few weeks ago, in an archaeological capacity but ever on the watch for wildlife, and saw masses of spawn in one of the chambers of a Neolithic court tomb. Got a wee kick out of this because some antiquitarians have suggested in the past that court tombs are womb-like in form and shape!! :p
