photos and copyright?

I have a bunch of photos of an event and I've bought a good few photos from the photographer. He even gives a website address where anyone can look and order a photo (at a massive price)

Ideally I would love the photos digitally. We are sorry we even got these photos from him as we can't have the origional digital images. more than likely they will not be used for anything else except on the computer for a screen saver or in the digital frame we have.

Anyway the meat of the current issue is the site has photos of the event at a reduced size which would prob be half the size of a standard small photo. One can't right click and download the images... infact the site gained access to my clipboard and removed the contents... this enraged me as I'm in the middle of programming as well.

Anyway I've managed to download all the photo's. How wrong is that? Is that deemed illegal? If I distribute them in an email is that illegal also? I really don't understand... the photographer took pictures of me and my mates we paid him to do so, we also paid him for photos to be printed...

You should have found out what happens to the images before you paid him tbh.

The photos are his, if you've taken his photos, you're breaking the copyright...

Yes, yes, yes. You have no right to the photos, unless you have a written contract to say that you do. The photographer owns the copyright to the images, and for you to take/use them is a breach of copyright, for which the photographer can take a case against you.

I know it's late now, but always make sure you know what happens to the photos.

Have you asked for CD of the high res files? You'd most likely have to pay for it, but if you really wanted it...

It's very common that you don't get digital copies, or if you do, it's an additional cost (€200-300 usually). That's how the photographer makes extra money - reprints of the images.

If you are paying someone to photograph you or an event, make sure it is detailed in the contract what you get for the agreed price. Otherwise, it's up to the photographer.

good ponits, this guy isn't going to give us the high res files... maybe we'll wait a year...
Isn't everyone breaking the law tho... by going onto the site isn't my browser which cache's the files in temporary internet folders doing something illegal? Then is it illegal for me to copy stuff from my temporary internet folder... I'm being silly here!

[edit] I know its a bad place to be argueing anyway, but I've gotten my correct answer anyway (/rambling I guess); I'd assume that most of the photographers here would definately have vested interests in their photos, but I'm trying to make the difference in saying that we've already paid enough... but stupidly didn't stipulate it in the contract in the beginning.[/edit]

It's not wrong for your browser to cache the images, but it is very wrong for you to use these images without the expressed permission of the photographer.

Seems the issue here is high res images.

Why not ask for and pay for the high res images. Problem solved:confused:

No harm in asking, tbh! :)

But I know what you mean, it's easy sign the dotted line, in assumption you'll be getting the high res files.

Most of my packages for weddings, events, etc come with a CD of low res images - The photos are printable to 6x4.

Might be as well to get some money together from a few people in the family and buy the CD?

No need to talk about his package ... this is a public forum.

But, you haven't seen his photos.

LOL, nah, in fairness, I've recommended Fajitas to a few people myself.
