Mods, not sure if this is serious enough an issue for PI so feel free to move...

Need a reference for a job and they need a reference from a "Professional" for a certain period in my life when I wasn't working.

Was wondering if an Optician qualifies as a professional? My GP isn't really co-operating.

    Thanks.

I'm assuming its a character reference they are looking for. It can be anyone really as long as they know you and have a job! Do you know your optician well enough for them to write you a character reference?

I've heard of Parish Priests giving character references for people before?

    Maybe a local counciller?

    It's a Professional that's needed. i.e. Solicitor, Doctor, etc.

Just wondering if Optometrist comes under that list.

Think it does. I'll try it anyway. Thanks.

    Thanks.

I'm just wondering from this if there was a medical reason why you were not working? If so then your G.P should really state that for you. If it's not medical i dont see how the optician can help. Usually it is some upstanding member of the community. As previous poster mentioned, Parish priest, Teacher,, lecturer, Garda?

No it's not from a period of sickness.

It's for security clearance. Parish Priest or Garda doesn't cut it in this instance either. It's a Professional I need the reference from. It specifies that.

My GP will probably do it, but he was being awkward so then considered asking my neighbour who's an optometrist.

I'll just go back to my doctor. Thanks anyway folks.

I always find this **** weird. How is the opinion of someone who only knows your history of illness any use as a work reference? Surely your Doctor has no idea if you're a wanker or a scumbag or reliable or whatever?

This is just because getting a security clearance in this country is a joke process.
You can walk in any gov building in this country without showing an ID. Garda HQ included.
Other countries they don't ask you for a reference, they go after them. Speak to your neighbors, family, people you came across, ex military officer etc..
