    Hi Folks,

Does anyone do the above commute?

I am looking into my options and unfortunately for the time being a car is not one of them (short term) so I'm stuck with public transport.Looks a long (time wise) commute to say the least.

I havent actually done it yet but im just looking to gague the quickest way.
Can anyone with experience on any of the routes please comment on the average time it takes (9-5 job)

    2 routes have presented themselves.

    Bus num/Route/Duration (dublin bus website)

    75/Tallaght- Dun Laoghaire/90 mins
    111/Dun Laoghaire- Loughlinstown/20 mins

    Bus num/Route/Duration (dublin bus website)

    65/Tallaght - City centre/60 mins
    145/City centre-Loughlinstown/80 mins

Both look at mimimum 4 hr round trips currently which seems nasty to say the least so basically what Im looking for is feedback on the realistic route times at peak times (morning and evening) and any other options I have to get from A to B?

    Sounds like a difficult one.

You could try changing to the 17 or 18 halfway in, but both are quite fickle.

Another option would be the 65x, which would get you to Belfield in one move, although there is a limited service and it still goes through town.

Another option is to walk from Rathmines Bridge to Leeson Street Bridge.

I don't know what the journey times are like on the Red Line Luas in the mornings, but you could take that to Lower Abbey St. and then take the 145 from O'Connell St. I'd imagine that outbound journey times on the 145 would be less than 80 mins though once you've got out of the centre .. it usually takes me just over an hour to get from the other side of Bray town centre to Dublin City Centre on the 145 outside peak times, so if you're only going as far as Loughlinstown I'd think you'd be fine.

I'd suggest a few 'dummy runs' .. don't want to be experimenting with this on your first day at work really.

The first 75 (0630) should make the journey to Stillorgan in about 45 minutes, where you can change to either the 84 or the 145, the latter being very frequent and which should get to Loughlinstown in under 20 minutes.

This first option would get you in for 0745 or so, which by the sounds of things is too early.

After that the 75 gets bogged down in traffic, and you would need to allow 70 minutes for the trip to Stillorgan, especially as it takes a tour of Sandyford Industrial Estate en route.

Otherwise I can only suggest the LUAS and then the 145 from the city centre, as the bus will take longer in the morning peak from Tallaght to the city (typically 80 minutes). Journey times would be 40 mins (LUAS) and 50 minutes (145) approximately.

On the return trip, avoid the 75 at all costs. It gets stuck in Sandyford, Dundrum and Firhouse and will take forever. You would be better getting the 145 and LUAS.

Would the 145 from City Centre be fast than the 7 ?

I found the 7 fills up after 2/3 stops & is then a direct run as far as Blackrock where people start getting off.

The 145 just carries straight on along the N11 which would be much quicker than the route the 7 takes through Blackrock and Dun Laogahire I'd imagine.

finnegans run a service from Sandyford to Bray - might be quicker than changing at Stillorgan (though its probably not as frequent as the 145)

The 145 was designed (like most of the new routes) to operate directly along the QBC and thereby offer a faster route into town. As such it does not serve Stillorgan, Cornelscourt or Cabinteely Villages, continuing along the N11. Therefore I would think yes it would be quicker, helped by the fact that there are several other high frequency routes along the route helping out as well!

There's a circle line from Monkstown to citywest which is sometimes quicker than the 75/111. Either way it's a long trip via public transport. In another few months the Luas may be a possiblity but until then expect to spend alot of time on buses. Also the 65 is at least an hour and can be much longer especially on Fridays. You may find someone heading from Tallaght to Loughlinstown via car if you're lucky.

The Mortons service operates from Sydney Parade to Citywest, but is going in the opposite direction to that of the OP at the times he is travelling. There is only one bus in each direction on this service.

The LUAS will not be an option to Loughlinstown/Cherrywood until 2010, so a bit longer than "a few months"!!

Either negotiate to start an hour earlier and take the 75/145 in each direction, or really there is no viable public transport option other than LUAS/145.

What about Luas to connolly, Dart from connolly to Dun Laoghaire, then the 7 or 111 to Loughlinstown?

    Or buy a car :D

I really cannot see that being any faster than taking the 145 from O'Connell Street - you're adding in an extra waiting time!

    How fit are you feeling?

Cycling would be your best option

He would want to be very fit, you are talking about a journey of 30KM!

I'd go with KC's suggestion of a run into town and the 145 outwards. What part of Tallaght are you coming in from, OP? Just that it is such a vast area that you may well have other buses close to you, other than the 65.

I'd ask the OP if its the Cherrywood Business park that they are starting work in. If so then maybe they can get a lift with a colleague that may be at least passing the Tallaght area. Or maybe put up an ad in a shop in the estate offering to contribute to fuel expenses in return for a lift. I've seen many ads like that around the place.

    That business park allright,

Car will be an option after week 2/3 I'd say so I'm just looking for a short term solution. Thanks for all the feedback folks.

Getting in too early shouldnt be much of a prob I wouldn't say. I'd rather be 1hr early than 1 min late.

Whats the travel time via the M50 in a car that early?

I used to do a regular trip from Saggart/Tallaght to Foxfock about 7:30AM and it would take 30-40 minutes. Cherrywood should be about the same as it's just off the M 50.
