Thankfully it is not common & I don't have figures of officers who have fallen in the line of duty since 1922 but does Ireland have one of these for officers who have given their lives whilst in the execution of their duty?

There is nothing on that scale, however they do have a roll of honour at the Garda College but it doesn't include those who have died at traffic accidents. A shame really.

Looking at the rolls of honour, it's apparent that riding a police motorcycle is a very hazardous occupation.

In this months Garda Review magazine features an article on a memorial garden which is to be built at Dublin Castle this year. The garden will feature polish marble walls, water features and a garden. The centre piece will be a wall containing all the names of Gardai who have been killed in the line of duty. This garden of rememberance is the brainchild of Garda Michael Duffy. A rememberance day is also being considered for the third Saturday in May 2009. The plans shown on the magazine look mighty impressive.

Fair play to Garda Michael Duffy for all his hard work.
