My Shopping List

Pay day finally on Friday for me and I plan to spend Saturday wandering music stores around Dublin...mainly between Tower, City Discs and HMV Grafton St (am I missing anywhere that I should include?).

I gave up smoking almost a year ago and have allowed myself a much bigger music budget each month since and generally do a Saturday where I buy a good few albums together. I have started to plan what music I want to look at by browsing various music sites and getting a list together...I hate driving home and remembering a CD I had planned to buy!

Anyway, this is my list for Saturday at the moment. Anyone got thoughts or opinions on them?

Two Lone Swordsmen - Tiny Reminders
    http://www.discogs.com/release/11722

    Clark - Body Riddle
    http://www.discogs.com/release/794112

Aphex Twin - I Care Because You Do (keep meaning to buy this one - is the comment on discogs correct in that it is quite melodic?)
    http://www.discogs.com/release/3535

    Gasman - Audiogold
    http://www.discogs.com/release/1123594

Bola - Shapes (going by the first two albums I have bought, I doubt this will disappoint)
    http://www.discogs.com/release/755668

Telefon Tel Aviv - ? (heard really good things about the album below and these guys in general but never heard them before, really curious about them)
    http://www.discogs.com/artist/Telefon+Tel+Aviv
    http://www.discogs.com/release/969146

Boards Of Canada - Twoism / Geogaddi? (which next, only have Music Has The Right To Children which I love now - took a bit though to fall in love :) )

    Appreciate any opinions!

    Cheers

If you're familiar with "Ventolin" you'll have a fair idea what the first 6 tracks are like on "I Care..." Tracks 7-12 are more melodic again with less harsh beats. The tracks are not as fast-paced as more recent stuff (no 500bpm snare fills!). I think it's a far more accessible album than SAW II or Drukqs. I think you can listen to track samples on the Warp site.

To be honest, I was a little disappointed by Geogaddi. It still has that 70's educational film feel with phased, slightly out-of-tune analogue synths, etc., but nothing really grabbed me about the melodies in the same way as tracks like Kaini Industries , Roygbiv and Aquarius on "Music has the Right...".

You can hear snippets on Amazon.co.uk for both Geogaddi and Twoism

Don't think I know Ventolin, not by name anyway. It sounds like what I am after though, I am looking for more down-beat and melodic so seems to fit the bill...must give it a blast too on the Warp site.

Yeah might just head for 'Twoism' then. Can't listen to any samples now, in the middle of listening to the 2nd disc on '26 Mixes for Cash' - really good and don't want to interupt it! That's another that I only listened to a couple of times until now. Funny how you go back to albums that didn't suit the mood at the time of purchase and then you hear what you have been missing.

    Thanks for the comments.

...I Care Because You Do is definitely one of RDJ's more melodic and downbeat albums. There are a lot of fantastic complex rhythms too, not as intricate as the drill'n'bass stuff on Drukqs but very smart and innovative nonetheless. Ventolin is definitely the most caustic track on the album. The first 2 tracks are amazing.

As for Boards of Canada I'd go for Geogaddi over Twoism first myself. I suppose its much of a muchness though, the fuzzy 70s TV theme does get a bit annoying after a while. They're both enjoyable albums though.

Haven't heard of any of the other stuff you mentioned, let us know if its any good ;)

Cheers cornbb, 'I Care' is a defo then by the sounds of it. Might just leave BOC out of this altogether and try again as a random/less planned purchase another time.

Will report back on the others :)

Well I got most of my shopping list above with the exception of BOC and Telefon Tel Aviv...none of their releases anywhere (Telefon that is, just changed my mind on BOC for now).

Of what I did get, the 'Body Riddle' album by Chris Clark is amazing first of all, I can't stress how excellent this album is and highly recommend the purchase.

In a much more upbeat and 'rave' sounding way, 'Audiogold' by The Gasman is another really excellent release, listened twice in a row yesterday while driving to Cork...thats unusual for me and says a lot about the CD. It's like a cross between Aphex Twin, Orbital and Autechre...in a very good way.

The Two Lone Swordsmen album is good but wouldn't get over excited about it. Mainly electro with the odd abstract track...worth the purchase but will only get occassional play, unless it clicks more in time which is quite possible.

Bola - Shapes. What can I say but another excellent album by Bola. Seriously, you really need to check out this guys work if you haven't yet heard. I bought 'Soup' a few weeks ago and have become seriously addicted to Bola and am now on a mission to get all his albums (I have 3 out of 5 now and all amazing). Start from the beginning and get 'Soup'.

    - Darrell Fitton aka Bola also appeared on the amazing Artificial Intelligence II; track 5, Disc 2 -

Only briefly listened to Aphex 'I Care...' - one listen so far and sounds really good, plan another sitting with it at the weekend! You all know this one anyway :)

Was in Cork yesterday and dropped into a shop on Washington Street, can't think of the name now, Plugged or something? Anyway, some really nice surprises awaited me in there!!!

First of all, I nearly dropped when I saw a copy of '20 Years Metroplex' by Juan Atkins. Been after this for a while and missed the original release in 2005. I had been told that it was deleted now before so either it's back out or a lucky find. It's an important double CD in many ways and features the earliest electro and techno sound from the techno Godfather :)

After recovering from my lucky find, I then went on to flick through some more discs still grinning away with my first win tightly clutched in my hand. Then I see this sitting tucked away at the back of a rack -

If you are not familiar with his music, check out some tracks below on youtube. Absolutely amazing stuff and well worth investing. More D&B of late but his early stuff is the dogs (I do like his more recent music but not a patch though IMO on the early days)

Last but not least, spied this Black Dog release there too and jumped on it.

Blew me away on first listen and I think maybe my favourite release now from them, really excellent.

I was in plugd yesterday (tuesday), good shop
thought HMV in cork was terrible, Zavvia or whatever it's called had some good offers
got Aphex (I care..) didn't listen yet tho.
Got Johan Johannesson - IBM 1401:A Users Manual in Plugd
    Enjoy your purchases :D

Yeah plugd, v good shop...be visiting there the next time I'm in Cork. HMV is rubbish alright, haven't been in there in ages. I do pop into Virgin/Zavvia? now and again too, pretty good for bargains and a more so in old albums of the non-electronic variety, not bad though too in that area.

What is that IBM album like? I read about it before and thought it sounded interesting but never got round to getting it.

I am still happy with my purchases, all amazing and t'was money well spent :D

    Listened to the IBM album
Wow it's great, really caught my ear,
It's really worth investing time and money in

    re: Bola - Shapes.

I have the triple 12" pack [purchased from Big Brother Records in 2000] with no tracklisting aside from shapes on the labels. Six tracks in total.

What are the extra tracks on the regular release like?

    re: Boards of Canada
Geogaddi is a big let down. The Campfire Headphase is somewhat better.
check out the six track Hi Scores 12" EP on Skam. Amazing. Also the Peel Session 12" which has Happy Cycling.

I wasn't familiar with the original Bola release in 2000 - well, I had seen it listed on discogs but didn't actually hear any until buying this album. To answer your question though, the whole album is excellent so I guess the tracks not included on the Vinyl release from 2000 are worth having from this release - I have to say though, I have loved everything I've heard from Bola so far!

Cheers re BoC. I had heard mixed reports about Geogaddi alright and held off for that reason, think I will leave it now altogether. Will look out for the other EP's you have mentioned.

    Seriously interesting label -
