Okay so I got my first REAL photo pass to shoot a sold out concert pretty soon.
I got in contact with the bands tour manager, wrote a long email, attached my portfolio, and he agreed to let me shoot it.
He took my name and said I was on the list, I asked if I needed to collect a pass or anything early in the day and he said "no just tell them your name and that you have a photopass and you should be fine"
I have read in forums that security are usually strict about this stuff..I don't have photo ID but I'll have my camera and stuff. Will I be allowed shoot it by just telling them my name?
I was thinking of printing the emails and such, and if there were any problems I could tell them the tour managers name and show them the emails so they could ask him.
I'm really looking forward to this I just always assumed I would have a badge or sticker or something..?
Sorry if I sound like a complete dope..

If you have his number, that'll be handy.

I usually just head to the gig, tell security my name and pick up my pass.

just go up to the door, say your on the list, they'll look at a sheet, direct you to a person/desk and you will be given your pass and any specific rules

    well done on the pass

Or, you'll say your name, they'll look at the sheet, say you're not on it, you can then wander about for a few minutes, call the tour manager and hopefully he'll send someone round.

Thanks guys! Should I head down earlier in the day and say it to them, or wait until I'm going in?
I'm really looking forward to it. I'll post any decent shots on here early next week!
Oh also - would the 50mm 1.8 be good enough to shoot with in the venue that begins with an A and ends in an R? (don't think i can say the actual name?)

One more thing..I got the pass to shoot one of the support bands..will I be kicked out after their set or allowed shoot the other bands? (the support band is probably bigger than the main band in the States but I have no idea how that works..!)
Apologies for all the questions. TIA!

i shoot with my 50mm in the ********** all the time, great lens for there.

you may be allowed shoot the main band, depends on the promoter and the main bands tour manager, ask the person who gives you your pass

what gig is it as i'll probably be there and feel free to ask for any advice

Give it a go, you're not able to mention the name of the gig because it's in that place though :(

50mm will do you grand there.

Head in just before the gig, or you'll be hanging about for a long time.

Do try get the tour manager's number, is always handy.

    Plain White T's!

Great! I'm used to shooting with my 50mm in dingy pubs and such so i'm looking forward to getting to use it somewhere with decent lighting!!

The good thing about Punk Rock is you don't have to grovel to these type of egos as Punk is 100% DIY.
I mean this in a non offensive way but I do also despise the way the "norm" is the way it is.

I film Punk bands and have only had trouble twice and that was at a supersized gig which I despised.

    My you tube videos

Janer put it well, but with the (upcoming) loss of the voodoo, these venues are disapearing too quick! Although good gig in Dorans tonight, but i'm missing it for work :(

The last time I was in the place that will go un-named, with a photo pass, I was stopped at least 6 times and asked for it.... so stick it on your fore-head or something!

i got my first(and only ever) photo pass for there. Stuck the sticker on my T shirt arm so they could see it. I only had my poxy Canon Pro Shot(it does excelent video) with me, it was a last minute thing.
Still got fantastic video of the support band(who got me the pass), and took some average to good pics of the main band.
I went in one side of the pit barrier so the guy recognised me, wasnt sure about the main band, the lead singer i later found out doesnt like photographers i believe and he was giving me some evil stares. Had to be a bit stealthy and flashless.

Not the greatest start but the absolute buzz i got off it was amazing.

 Why do people have time for people/egos like that??

post up a few of the pics then, see how easy or hard shooting your first big gig was?

    :-)

It's not necessarily an ego thing. If you know anything at all about the paparazzi world, you can understand why people might not like being targeted by photographers, plus if they use flash it's rough going if it's hitting your face.

Eeep. No pics from gigs from 'those who cannot be mentioned' please :)

Though, a link to your Flickr, etc would be nice :)

    Looking forward to seeing them.

Congrats, was hoping to do that gig. 50mm should be great, I use one as does pretty much everyone on here I think. Never had a problem in that venue with collecting passes etc, although it has happened in other venues where I've had to ring the promoter and sort it cause they never put me down, and once where I couldn't get ahold of them and wasted my time going in, which was extremely annoying. I belive I rang you that night Paul, to tell you just how annoyed I was. Haha.
