7mm Rem. Mag.

My brother is thinking of buying a rifle in 7mm Rem. Mag. He wants a rifle mainly for target shooting and a bit of deer stalking. He reckons that the 7mm Rem. Mag. is a very flat shooting long range round that would be ideal for long range F-Class out to and beyond the 1000 yard mark. He thinking of buying a Remington model 700 CDL.
He thinks the .308 Win. is inferior beyond the 800 yard mark and the popular 6.5x284 is an expansive wildcat calibre that requires a custom rifle and hand-loading. I suggested he look at the .300 winchester magnum and the .300 rem. Ultra mag. as well. What do the rest of you think? What is the best standard (for example the .338 Lapua is very expensive and not many rifles are chambered for it) long range round?

Is he a member of an authorised club ?, has he experience of shooting at these distances ?, where does he propose to shoot out to and beyond 1,000 yards ?

I have no experience of the 7mm Rem Mag, although it got a very good review in shooting sports a while back. The only advice I can give is to make sure to check availability and cost of ammo. The 6.5 is my preferred round, good lapua target ammo available at a reasonable cost.

First of all, I don't think a Remmy CDL straight outta the box would be good enough for 1000yd shooting. The TRG 42 is chambered for 300 win mag. TBH I think your brother is looking for one rifle to do too much. The Remmy would be ideal for stalking - not over heavy, but requires too much work done to it to be a 1000yd rifle. A TRG 42, coupled with something like a Schmidt and bender PMII is too much of a dog to be humping around with.

If he is that way inclined, a Tikka T3 Tactical in 300 win mag, would be a good option.

I believe the 308 is at its maximum at 800yds also, but the other calibres mentioned give a fair auld kick.

A .223 rifle with a fast twist will fire 75gr bullets well enough to 600yds I believe. If your bro is starting out maybe he should be looking at this calibre instead??

Does the T3 Tactical come in .300 win mag? The site only lists .223 rem and .308 win. The Super Varmint looks fairly similar and comes in .300 win mag. Perhaps that's the one?

I shoot 7.62 out to 1000 yards with regularity. A .223 will go out to 1000 yards as well once its set up properly.

A 7mm mag or equivalent is too much rifle for the ranges in the south, plus the ammo that you would buy would not be target ammo but hunting rounds.

Stick to what has been tried and tested. 223, 308, 6.5 swed. If you want to be exotic go for a 6mm br…… They will all reach 1000 yards (and beyond)

Plus if you ever go to sale it on, trying to find somebody who wants a 7mm mag or a .300win mag will be quite hard to find….

The t3 tactical is available in 300 win mag, only as a special order.

Just nitpickin here but the average shooter wouldnt have the skill for a competent kill at 1000yrds with .223, wind drift and bullet drop affecting shot placement way too much!! me thinks,
    just my two cents
