Gearbox question 2nd hand car - 'clunky' sounds.

Can anyone give me some advice on the gearbox of a second hand car? When stationary there is a little tinny sound in the gearbox when the gearstick is rattled in the neutral position. It sounds like the stick is tipping against something (or something is tipping against something - pardon my lack of knowledge!) when moved to the extreme left just before shoved into first. The car drives well enough for me though it is hard to know when you're not accustomed to a different car. Otherwise I am very happy with the car.

I would be worried about a noisy gearbox but maybe unnecessarily so in this case - I don't know. Do some peoples gearboxes rattle a bit anyway with no bad consequences? It's a common enough model if I needed to get the box replaced - am really tempted to buy it. Any help/advice/suggestions would help greatly.

    thanks

it's sort of a clicking sound to the left - maybe a lot of cars have clicky gears I just haven't driven a lot of cars.

sounds likely just to be a chacteristic of a used car. It is 10yrs old of course. If it selects all gears, drives ok and doesnt knock or rattle while moving dont worry about it. its just parnoia. Have some else check it out if in doublt still.
