    Howdy,

    Have a 97 Merc C200 with a dodgy key.
Sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes it doesn't work, have to manually push down buttons and then lock the driver's door the old-fashioned way with the bit of the key thing that comes out of the main key.
Don't think it's a battery problem as the red LED in the key is shining brightly when any of the buttons are pressed, any time.

Anybody else heard of this before?Any solutions?

    Thanks.

Happened to me, replaced key with new one from main dealer.

.........you were stung. The new key only costs €86 programmed !

I would chance new batteries anyway, buy them on eBay, the key takes 2 and you will get a 6 pack on the net for the price of 1 battery here !

Does the central locking work from the interior switch at all ?

What about the boot popper ?

Car is a 97 W210, Key is the modern type (ie 3 button)

    Procedure was :
prove my identidy and car's identidy to dealer
leave car in to dealer for a day,
    New key ordered from Germany

One month later key arrives from Germany,
leave car back to dealer for key to be paired to car

Having spoken to other merc owners this appears to be the going rate.

Had a similar problem with the key of a c180 and I took the key apart, lightly cleaned it - (blew on it and light rub of a clothe) and it works perfect now??

    Worth a try??
