    howdy
ye know that thing for guitar players that you hold with your picking hand and (as far as I can gather..) if you press a button on it, it sends a signal playing whatever note you're fretting?

what the hell is it called? I've been googling all kinds of weird and wonderful things ('wireless note fretter' etc...:) but nowt! Can't seem to find it among accessories on the larger online equipment sellers either.

Did they stop making them after Pink Flyod split up???;)

One of the best things ever invented. I <3 my ebow.

Are they really any good? I've always fancied trying one, but dont know anyone with one. They're about €100 a pop so not something you'd want to buy and end up having it dumped in the gear bag after a month or so.

They are fun but you have to really go out of your way to use it. They don't work as well as you'd hope. Changing strings and position of the ebow will make big dips in volume.
I've had one for ages and honestly haven't picked it up in about a year.

Well with a bit of practice you can switch strings with no hassle and you're not meant to move the ebow much anyway as it is meant to be over the sweet spot of the pick up. You can get really awesome sounds though by moving it to and from the pickup. It's all a question of practice and experimentation. I've found it useful in a few songs of ours.

I know how to use it but its no exact science, changing strings will cause a bit of a delay regardless in the sound. Depends on the music you play for its uses. Its awesome for those eerie lead lines and great for background noise. However, I wouldn't think they are a necessary tool for every guitarist.

Oh I agree that they really aren't standard kit but I just gave my 2c as your outlook seemed a little too negative, just a bit of balance :)
