    hi guys
anyone have experience shooting a 25.06 rem.
I,ve had a tikka t3 lite for a few yrs in 223 rem but applying for deer licence soon so looking at other calibres. on paper the 25.06 looks like a really good fox/deer round kind of like a hotter .243 but I,d like to know if ammo for it is easily available and what weights. also if anyones got an idea of ammo prices
    thanks

I have no real experience with a 25.06 other than shooting off a few rounds whilst in the u.s, but imo its not really a really good fox round,
but it is an excellent long range deer round. It would depend if you are going to use it mostly for one or the other, if like myself your main quarry is foxes with the occasional deer, then you are probably better off with a 243-where you can opt for light 55 grain bullets for fox and heavier rounds for deer-the recoil from a 25.06 is not going to let you see hits on foxes etc.
ammo would probably be another problem and if you ever were able to reload for it then you will find it has a big appetite for powder. so the way
i reckon is that its way overkill on the bog standard 125 yard irish fox
but an excellent long range deer roundicon10.gif

I highly recommend it. I use a 25-06 sako finnlight, i can't fault it in any way, if you ever intend shooting Red deer i would recommend it over the .243. Or if you ever intend shooting in europe(where minimum bullet diameter for wild boar, muflon and Reds is 6.5mm) or the UK. Its a fantastic long range caliber with plenty of punch. I generally don't have too much hassle getting the ammo i want. I can't fault it for shooting foxes either, but i use a T8 on the end, so no muzzle flip. Un-moderated its noisey and flips with light barrells. For what its worth, it is a very popular rifle with professional deer managers in this country, especially any that are hill stalking.

    hi marlin

i used a 25-06 for 6 years and would highly recommend it to anyone. recoil is almost non existant even with a 120 grain bullet in a medium to heavy rifle and i never once lost sight picture after firing the shot. in my opinion it is probably the best hunting calibre out there without getting into arguments about these things but the combination of a fairly heavy bullet and no muzzle flip make it a perfect round even at longer distances when needs must

i think it starts off at an 85gr bullet and the heaviest is 120gr. i could be wrong on te 85gr though but haven't yet come across anything lighter

    thanks for info guys
john any idea of prices on the ammo and do u have to order it in or is it usually on the shelf,
I know the 243 is a more popular round but I have seen a sika take a good hit and still make it to the cover of the woods and get lost,it was about a 180 yd shot and I thought at the time if a bigger calibre was used the outcome would be different.
I still shoot more foxes and so don,t want to go to .270 or .308 so the 25.06 looks good.
I,ll probably have all the .243 guys screaming at me now..lol

Not really sure of the price but i don't think it is anymore expensive than most the other deer calibers, the guy i get it from always has it in stock and i usually buy a few hundred at a time. I've used various different bullets over the years, the only ones i don't use on deer are the 90grain Federals. The Winchester silver tips are great, Sako are fine. Federal great especially the 100grain ballistic tip if you can get them. Anything above 100grains for deer and for foxes you can use the lower stuff if you want but at the moment i use federal 117grain softpoint for everything, find them great.
The way to save money with ammo is to buy it in bulk and all the same batch that way you won't be re-zeroing everytime you need a new box of bullets, cos the problem with dealers in Ireland is that they have difficulty with consistently getting the same bullets, every time you ask for something its a case of, well i got these in.
The 6.5 swedish is a fine round but drops very quick and needs very accurate range estimation for long distance shooting.
I have recommended the 25-06 to alot of people, never had any complaints from them yet, usually the opposite:)

i have to agree with john that at times its hard to get the same ammo all the time and its best to buy in bulk. but nearly always yo will find a few boxes of ammo somewhere around. i always found the 100gr ballistic tip an excellant choice for deer

25.06 can be got worth the money from john lambert camolin wexford .i have been shooting it for some years now in a sako 75 .it is by far the most suitabable round for irish conditions also it is the most accurate firearm i have owned .caution should be used when shooting deer with lighter grain bullets as they can blow up on bone ..federals 100gr ballistic tip with a zero of a inch high at a 100 yards will only be about seven ,eight inch s low at 300 ideal for necking hinds and calf s

I've been shooting the 25 for about a year now, even took it to Africa using the 100 gr feds with the nosler tips it was taking Kudu and Springbok out to just over 300 metres.
