There is no obligation for your employer to pay you during your lunch break.

I always thought you got paid a half hour for every 8 hours work or something like that!?

No. You're entitled to a break, but you're not entitled to get paid for that break.

Does anyone get paid for lunch? I've never heard of that and don't see why an employer would.

I have got paid before on part time jobs while on lunch - we also got to expense the lunch if we were outside dublin

other jobs I had to clock out

Anytime where I was paid by the hour, I used to clock off for lunch (though I didn't we didn't do so when working on the assembly line for Apple in Cork). When temping, lunch time was always unpaid.

May I ask what line of work you're in? I've not heard of it in IT anyway. People clock out, etc during lunch.

Im in IT. I've worked for IBM, contract with an RBS merchant bank subsidiary, for a large educational institution on contract, for ulster bank on contract and also for my current place of employment which I won't mention.

None of which used a clock in card system, and all of which pay lunch.

    Z,
Were your contracts, priced per hour or per day?
If they were per day then the daily rate is a factor of the number of hours worked.
If per hour, can you pm with the line of work your in....I need to get in there!!
