Im upgrading my firmware, have been for about 15 mins .. the player
says "recovery mode" and the app. on my laptop says "Player is now rebooting,
    please wait"

its the PlaysForSure firmware ver 2.11.01 from 1.01.03 ...

    OK .
I take it as this is too long, it went on for another 30 mins doing nothing
just saying "Recovery mode" ... anyway I've decided to get a new mp3 player.
I think ill go for an iPod, anyone recommend a good solid one ?

not an ultra slim one ,, i hear they break too easily, im not looking for a pretty sleek one, just a good (40Gig'ish) solid one that should last .. with good battery life etc
