New LCD interfering with Sky+ remote?

Ok, my head is a mess with this one.

Recently got Sky+ installed. No problems, love it. On Saturday I went out and bought a Samsung 32" TV and as far as I can tell, since then, the Sky+ remote works intermittently.

I can't seem to figure out how a 32" LCD would interfere with the operation of the Sky+ remote. The box simply refuses to acknowledge the remote signal. Sometimes it works, it is very hard to pin down when it does/does not work.

Any ideas how I could start troubleshooting this?

The sky remote is programmable , have you re-programmed it for the new TV? For the Sky box and the TV , it should be the only remote you are using.

Does it work OK when the LCD is unplugged (power)?

May be a faulty box. Did you try connecting the old telly again?

Yeah, that has got me thinking - I reprogrammed the Sky remote for the new TV. I wonder if I "undo" the programming and reset the remote back to it's default settings will that do anything. I'll try that when I get home later.

The problem is, the old TV is a huge, clunky 28" CRT. It's a pain in the ass to connect it back up. But if the reprogramming of the remote doesn't do it, I'll go ahead an plug it back in.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    Tom,

Sorry to hi-jack your thread but how do you programme the sky remote?

When you press the remote you should see a red light on both the remote control *and* the sky box each time. Is this happening? This should tell you what's happening - no need to actually plug in the old TV.

Sometime my sky+ box just stops responding properly to the remote - normally pressing the Sky button and going back to a live TV picture fixes it - but you could unplug the box for 30 seconds and see if it fixes it.

It doesn't sound like this is the case but ... when you press the TV button on the Sky remote it changes Mode and now controls the 'tv'. Press the Sky button to change the remote back to controlling the sky box.

Some LCD tvs can interfere with the signal from the remote. If the Sky box is very close to the screen try moving it further away from the screen

The Samsung TVs have IR transmitters on them, and they're quite powerful.

We have one of those light switches in the living room that came with a remote control for turning on/off and dimming the lights. The bloody Samsung telly interferes with it and basically messes with the lights for the first few mins after it's switched on. The only solution was to cover the IR receiver window on the switch.

If you have a camcorder or digital camera, try looking at the TV set through it, and you should be able to see where the IR transmitter is and when it's active.

    Camera phones work well too.

Dunno. Thought it might be to do with Anylink+, but it doesn't seem to be.

That seems a bit bizarre, why would a tv have an infrared transmitter?

Anyway, it appears to be the box. The light on the remote fires when a button is pressed. But when the box doesn't respond, the red light on the box doesn't light up - suggesting the box is either malfunctioning, or something is interfering with the signal.

Stay tuned for further updates. :)

Ok, it's the TV all right.

I moved the Sky+ behind the TV and the box is responding perfectly. No problems changing channels and it is much quicker responding. So there has to be something (an infrared transmitter? :D) interfering with the signal.

So there you go. It's a Samsung 32", according to the booklet that came with it, it's either model no. LE32R8, LE37R8 or LE40R8. Can't figure out which from the TV itself.

It is a known issue with certain LCDs creating IR interference with other devices, Samsung in particular but other brands as well. It doesn't effect everyone so it is probably borderline and depends on the specifics of the room and placement of TV in relation to the other equipment.

If placing the Sky+ where it can recieve the remote properly is not practical a workable fix would be to buy a remote eye for the sky+ and place it out of the way of the interference.

Although the manufacturers have known about this for a few years they don't appear too bothered about sorting it.
