    Hey,

Looking for advice. Looking to get someone a laptop as a present for about 600 to 700e. Does anyone know where I could get a decent one?

Need it by tenth of February as that's their birthday so think Dell may be out due to delivery times. A pity because the Inspiron 1525 looked good. Does anyone know of any good models in PC World or other stores at present?

Just because dell are out of the question doesn't mean you can't shop on line. Try elara.ie (that links to their laptops section and everything sorted by price in ascending order), they have a massive stock and their prices are fairly good.

Stay away from a celeron or sempron processor and try to get one with 2GBs of ram.

According to their website delivery should only take a few days.

Laptopsdirect.ie have some very nice Lenovo's (IBM) for e700 and under. Thinkpad R60's and N200's.

For the money, they're quality machines, reliable and sturdy. And some of them ship with XP instead of Vista, which will help make the most of a low-medium spec laptop.

Search the forum for posts about laptopsdirect before thinking about ordering though. I haven't dealt with them so I can't comment on their service.

Most of the laptops on there are Acers or other dodgy sounding brands. I'd prefer to get something more well-known and to get it in a brick and mortar shop si I definitely have it and there are no issues etc.

I just got a DELL laptop (VOSTRO 1700). Ordered on friday, arrived tuesday in Belfast. Can't get much better than that.

Its a fine machine too, and great value.

I wouldn't dismiss dell straight away, if you order through dell outlet you should have your machine in a week, and definitely before the 10th February. Most issues seem to be when buying a "new" machine custom made. just a thought.

I've got a 1330 for under 600 on the Dell Outlet. Hasn't arrived so dunno if I'll like it or not. But if you shop around you can get a good deal. 1525 hasn't turned up on the outlet store yet. If you buy off the outlet it will arrive in under 2 weeks. Prebuilt etc.

Went for this Inspiron 1720 in the end. Looked good to me. Is it good? The person I got it for will only be using it for the net and pictures and nothing major really.
