It's not up the site examinations.ie yet, but does anyone know when they normally recruit for examiners? Plus, I've been teaching for over a year but have no Hdip, does anyone know if they would allow me to correct exams?

As far as I'm aware they won't. Know they've always refused people from our school without. We got all the forms a few weeks ago in school.

It is on the website, under recruitment.

They have certainly used 'unqualified' people in the past at Junior Cert. level (can't speak for Leaving), even non-teachers. In some subjects they are very stuck for assistant examiners.

Thanks missed that. Sent my letter off tonight, it said it will look still look at late entries...suppose if they haven't enough markers.

Indeed. They are so stuck that even though I am a fully qualified teacher, they turned me down last year as "you have not corrected for us before".

Wouldn't even let me formally apply.

As with the jobs situation, it's incredibly depressing to constantly read posts online from unqualified staff, even without experience, walking into both marking and teaching posts with only half a clue of what is involved.

I can't move for job offers in other countries and have excellent references.

Of course, it's probably my own fault for going to Britain to obtain my degree when Ireland did not have enough university places for us.

As I said, it depends on the subject. For some, they are still asking people well into June.

Did you apply on time? They have a cut off date which is early enough, December I think.

anyway as spurious said, in some subjects they are always looking for people. in others not so, in my subject there are only 8 correcting HL and 3 of us correcting OL as it is one of the less popular subjects. Not much call for recruits there and there isn't much in the way of turnover.

    History and Junior Cert history.

you would probably have a better chance if you applied for JC rather than LC as a first time corrector. and if you are willing and able to correct through Irish that's always a bonus as there aren't huge numbers sitting exams through irish but they still need to be corrected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,595 ✭✭✭MathsManiac

History seems to be one of the few LC subjects in which the numbers are growing (see http://www.examinations.ie/statistics/statistics_2007/LC_2007_breakdownResults_10_or_More.pdf), so it might not be a bad one.

On the form, you can list more than one thing that you want to do, so you could go: LC higher History, LC ord History, JC higher History; JC ord History. If they don't need you for LC, they might still slot you in at JC, and I think that showing a desire to do LC sends a good signal.

JC History has a very high turnover rate.

Correcting for mocks this week I can see why there's a high turnover for Junior Cert history. Every student answers the social history question and answers it incorrectly.

Got accepted to correct Junior Cert history. Can anyone tell me how much you get paid per paper and about how many scripts do you get? Anyone else doing it?

I'm going to be correcting CSPE aswell, but thats the only info they gave me. Anyone know what the rate of pay is?

You should get between 300 and 400 scripts. Can't comment on how much they are - it's been a while since I did it. I used to come out after tax with about 1000 euro, but that was a few years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,397 ✭✭✭✭rainbowtrout

i did JC Science a couple of years ago and i think it was between €3-4 per paper (before tax). Closer to €4 I reckon. As was said you should come out with in and around €1000, depending on the rate, how many papers you get and expenses.

anyone able to tell me what the timing is like for correcting it - I'm correcting one of the last exams for the JC so will it be all of July...into August. couldn't seem to get a straight answer off them.

Usually everything has to be finished three weeks from the date of the examiner's conference.

It said on the sheet 26 days after the conference is when you'll finish. Max €4 per paper seems so low doesn't it. How much expenses can I expect? Live in Dublin, I think the history conference is in Athlone

All the conferences are in Athlone.
You won't get a lot more than the public transport rates to and from Athlone, in fact I think they now send out a warning about people not using public transport where they could.
Since the rate per paper is so low (and it's a lot better than it was), the expenses used to be a way to increase the money you got, but this has been clamped down on in the past years.
Correcting is not worth it at all for the money, but has other benefits.

your conference will probably be the first week of july, i've never gone beyond the 31st July with corrections any year i've done it. It would leave it vey tight to go beyond that because of the bank holiday

Mileage to and from Dublin and overnight expenses if you are more than 80 km from conference I think. I think there is some sort of conference fee if your conference is two days. In this instance I don't think public transport would be practical as you will be hauling two heavy sacks of papers home with you.

Does anyone know when I can expect to hear from them regarding when the conference is and how much I'll get paid?

Also, does anyone know, when do we get paid for doing it?

you will probably get the letter about the conference in sometime in may, probably in the next fortnight. If it's anything other than English, Irish or Maths it will probably be on the first week of July. You won't find out the rate per script until the conference itself.

Last time I did it we got a cheque for 200 or 300 early on and then it was October or November before we got the rest.

They have improved on that. I think first timers get 400 and everyone else gets 800 or 1200. And the rest is paid 6 weeks after finishing, I usually get paid the balance mid September

I got a letter today to say I have to go to a conference in July. I will need to stay in Athlone though because I live too far away to travel down each day. Does anyone know whether I can claim expenses for it? If so, how do I do this? Thanks

    Is yours a two-day conference?
You will get an expenses form to fill in when you are submitting your claim forms. There is a set overnight subsistence rate, so don't go booking the Hodson Bay. Keep all receipts.

Thanks for this. Have you any idea what the rate is? Would it be E100 for the hotel or what? Sorry, I just have no clue how it works, never done it before

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 27,316 CMod ✭✭✭✭spurious

I will have a root about here through old papers and see what I can find. The rate doesn't only cover the hotel (cor posh) or B&B - it's supposed to also cover a slap-up meal in the evening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,397 ✭✭✭✭rainbowtrout

I'm out examining practicals at the moment and the overnight rate is €141.61. I'm assuming it's the same for the corrections. Book into a B&B, or stay with a friend if you know anyone in the Athlone area. Do keep your receipts, but I don't think they look for them once your expenses are within reason. I've never sent in a receipt in the last 7 years and i've never been asked for one. I don't know anyone that has but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I'm open to correction.

If you are attending a 2 day conference you will be entitled to the overnight for staying for the second day. However if you live more than 80km from athlone, you will get an overnight for travellling to Athlone the night before the conference begins.

Yes that sounds like the figure I used.
I think they 'hit' various subjects now and then and do a spot check on receipts and claims in general.
When you're sending in your claim, make sure to photocopy it as there are some instances of forms going missing and people's money being delayed.

It depends on when the exam was on. The earlier the exam the earlier the conference is generally. A lot of the minority subjects that are on the last couple of days of the LC are usually on at the same time, I correct Ag Science and usually run into the people correcting Applied Maths, Latin, Greek etc when I'm attending my conference. Mine is on June 30th and July 1st. So you can probably expect it to be around then or maybe a couple of days earlier.

does anyone know when you make a claim for expenses and when you get the expenses back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,397 ✭✭✭✭rainbowtrout

you get an advance within a couple of days of the conference, i think the amount depends on how long you have been correcting and then you send in your claim form when you are finished correcting, you usually get paid about 6 weeks after correcting has finished/from when you sent in your claim form, usually around the middle of september.
