I received a magazine in the letter box yesterday - 'Living in Atlhone'. It mentioned that the new N6 at Moate will be opening in April 2008. Does anybody know if this means the entrie stretch from Athlone to Kilbeggan will be open in April or are they planning on opening a section to bypass Moate initially? Couldn't find the info on the usual roads webpages.

AFAIK the section between Kilbeggan and Moate is next to be opened, stopping just before Moate so you will still have to go through the town which makes no sence.......

Ah just read there in the Westmeath Indo that there was plans to open the section bypassing Moate in April 2008 but the plans have been shelved and the entire stretch from Kilbeggan to Athlone will open in August or September:(

    Balderdash.

I drove to Athlone last week, and thankfully due to the odd hours, didn't hit a blockage at Moate. The stretch of the bypass along there looked as it was almost ready to be opened - was hoping that it'd be done by the end of July.

According to the local paper last week, the stretch from Kilbeggan to Athlone is due to open July 14th. It will open as a dual carriageway first and then be upgraded to motorway.

Or maybe July 16th as it says in that link. Mid-July at any rate!

Drove it yesterday evening. Signed as motorway all the way from Kilbeggan to start of the Athlone bypass(Kilmartins), but speed restricted to 100kmh all the way. Also didn't notice any of the usual Motorway Ahead signs(list of things no allowed and minimum speed). Excellent road and will make a big difference for people heading west at the weekend.
