Laptop not picking up wireless signals....

    Hi

I am currently using magnet broadband. my laptop is wireless enabled and it picks up the signal from our modem. However last thursday the signal dropped (the little screen icon had a red 'X' on it to show that it was not connected). i assumed someone had plugged out the modem but alas no (a and the other people in the house could pick up the signal). I right clicked on the screen icon and tried to 'repair' but it could not connect to wireless network. When i opted to 'view available wireless networks' it told me there were none in range, despite the others in the house being able to pick up 3 or 4 different signals. Its the same when i bought my laptop to a friends house, couldn't even detect their wireless network. A friend got me the drivers for my laptop and I re-installed them but no joy. Could the card in my laptop that picks up wireless signals be broken and if so how much would it cost to get it repaired?

    thanks

Have you mistakenly switched the wireless card off. Some laptops have a switch on the side of the unit or front. Other models have and "fn" button at the front which works with F2 or F3 along the back. should have a wireless symbol on it. Also there should be a wireless symbol lit up some where around the keyboard if it is an integrated wireless newer model laptop.

What type of laptop is it? IS the wireless adapter switched on and enabled. What type of wireless adapter is it? Its possbile the wireless card is faulty, sadly if its shagged and out of warranty then repairing might be costly or you could get a 3rd party PCMCIA wireless adapter made by Linksys or 3com and have it installed in your laptop. If your house mates are also unable to pick up the wireless network it means the issue was not localised to your laptop and that the router is probably in need of a reset or a replacement.

In work at the mo, so can't check anything on it as its at home. Its a sony VAIO but not sure what model. The warranty's up alright. Bought it in April 06 with one years warranty AFAIK. House mates CAN pick up the signal and I also couldn't pick up any signals in my friends house which made me think its the laptop and not the provider

That sounds like your wireless card is switched off. Sony Vaio depending on the model usually has a little switch on it for turning on/off the wireless adapter. If you go online or even check a Sony site for a .pdf user manual it should have all the shortcut and function key combinations for enabling and disabling your wifi etc.

There should be a light on the laptop somewhere like a lollipop with waves coming form the top, if the light is off your wireless is off, you may need a driver update, what OS is it, I'm assuming XP. You can check the status of the adapter card in device manager, if it has a caution sign on it then you can get xp to update it for you.

Used to do support for the vaio's, there's a physical switch on the front or side of it all right. Usually had those calls done as quick as the "there's something wrong with my keyboard" calls. (Numlock :))

thanks people from a genuine IT novice!! I'll print this off and have a look when i get home. Must have knocked the switch off when I was leaving it down on the table.

Btw I use XP operating system.
