    Hi

After shelling out the guts of 1500 on a camera, lens and accessories I'm looking for insurance (and Ill possibly be adding more to it soon).

Im living in rented accomadation with no content insurance and Im looking for something to cover my stuff against theft and accidental damage

I've googled online but so far only found a few UK companies

    Any ideas?

Alternatively do you know of anyone that does insurance for contents in rented accomadation that would also cover the camera..

    jt are muchos costly(os)

123.ie do contents insurance for tenants. Had it last year.. 6000 worth of contents and 8k's worth of camera gear insurance for about 200 quid. That covers Ireland (north & south), UK and 60 days at any one time in the rest of the world.

As far as I remember, JT only cover the 26 counties and they wanted about 550 quid off me for about 6k's worth of gear.

reason for asking - now that my gear list is slowly growing, i'm a bit worry about accidental damage and theft.

Just get home contents insurance and add your camera as a listed item on that. That worked for me, for a long time.

Just call any insurance broker for contents only insurance.

I think one of our members here uses FBD for camera only insurance.

Listed on my shared/rented contents insurance with the camera, one lens and the computer listed as items exceeding 1000E. Axa Insurance if interested.

Mine is on my house insurance for no extra cost (Hibernian). Up to €2000 per item. No professional use.

Has anyone here had to make a claim following theft or loss?? Does it take long ??
I often wondered if anything happened would you be left waiting ages to get the money to get replacement gear.

I had my laptop stolen from my house, covered under the same policy with FBD as my camera, I had the cheque before I got the new laptop from dell, and I ordered it 2 days after the robbery.

FBD pay on the basis of new for old so I emailed up the spec of my old comp and the loss adjusters went on the Dell site and picked as close a spec as possible, and paid me that value, in the case of a camera I think they would give you the current value of a new copy of the stolen model.

After seeing this thread and buying over €2,000 worth of gear in the past week I decided to phone my insurance. I'm after adding €2,600 worth of lenses and accessories onto the policy, it cost me nothing extra to put them on. Their covered in and out of the house, theft, accidental damage and up to 60days abroad. AA Insurance ftw!

Only be careful to not represent yourself as a professional on your own web-site or whatever. That negates the policy.

If you are a professional, pay the extra it's worth it, if you just a few bob from photography, check with your insurer.

I never thought of that, thanks for pointing it out Covey.

At the moment I haven't made penny out of photography, it's just a hobby :)
