Insurance overseas if on a provisional?

I'm thinking of buying a bike in the Isle of Man. I want to go over, buy the bike, and then spend the weekend riding around the island with a friend of mine who lives there. However I'm told that when you are a provisional you are not allowed/insured to ride overseas. Is this true?

Would it be possible for me to get insurance for the few days I'm over there?
    Thanks

You can't drive outside of Ireland on a provisional.

You can't drive outside the Republic of Ireland on a provisional licence (issued in ROI). If you went up to Northern Ireland and were stopped by the PSNI you'd be in serious trouble.

I think they've something similar in NI, and again this isn't valid in ROI.

Indeed, no disrespect to th OP here but the lax attitude taken to learning to drive in the RoI has resulted in folks (mostly through no fault of their own) believing a provsional is actually a sort of driving licence. In other countries you'd treat it exactly as it should be-a learner's permit and no more.
