Anyone ever done a holiday like this? Basically we are looking for a fairly laid back family holiday near Bordeaux for me, my wife and our 18 month old trouble making toddler :)

My wife's sister lives in Bordeaux, so we'd like to visit them for a day or two.

Anyone used any good websites for this kind of thing or have any recommendations?

for accomodation try www.holiday-rentals.co.uk and www.holidaylettings.co.uk

Otherwise, you can't beat ryanair for the flights

    Car hire - www.carjet.com

much cheaper holiday and much more flexible than a package

Depending on when you're going, don't rule out the ferry/self-drive option - stopping off heading up and down thru France can be made part of the holiday itself though with an 18-month-old, you might prefer to go direct.

Have holidayed in French gites/cottages every year except one since 1999 with small kids in tow - we've tried diff. parts of France each time, and it's one country which never fails to surprise and delight in its variety, landscapes, cleanliness, cheap wine, etc !

This year we're tied to school holidays so planning 2 weeks in July/Aug. in eastern France (Alsace region) via Eurotunnel for hopefully something different yet again.

this is a very good site for finding gites

    http://www.gites-de-france.com/fr/gites_ruraux

a gite can be very different to a holiday home as some can be very basic, but they are much cheaper and you can find some great houses too.
