This is me vs versus a judo guy with around a year of BJJ. You'll see that I had nothing on him standing up, I have never felt anything like that grip! I've gone against wrestlers before - where the GI made it easier for me, obviously not in this case.
This match was the most satisfying tournament match I've had so far, not for any technique I got to use, but just because the match was intense and I was absolutely bolloxed by the time we got to overtime.

Anyone else got experiance of going against a non-pure BJJ guy in a grappling match?

BTW - so as not to make this a BJJ v Judo thing. I do realise this guy would dominate me a a judo match..

again feel free to rip my game apart !

Cool, well done. Very competitive bout which i like to see :). I love your open guard sweep were you grab his ankles and put him on his arse. Was that a golden score to win? you do it at least twice in the video.

    Sweet match dude!

How satisfying is it when someone sits back for an ankle and they just pull you with them!? Nice work.

I've gone against a Judo guy in Kav's, it was the first and only time I wore a Gi. I now know what I'm sure everyone on this board knows, the Gi is my kryptonite. Which is funny because I have loads of different things that are my kryptonite!

In response to things in your post:

That dude would dominate you in a Judo match. haha

Do you train any no-Gi? For ripping your game apart (and its better than mine so take it with loads of salt) I suppose I would have been calling for you to keep climbing your legs up his back when he's in your guard. And then the old standards that we can all improve on, posture, hip motion (like for takin his back after that slam) etc.

Well done again dude and good conditioning!!

    Peace

great match, very competitive. good work man..

this black belt come whos to train with us at our judo club makes an absolute mess of me anytime we roll. granted im not the best bjj player, but i dont have a problem with anyone else at the club. his basics are really solid and he has a really good base.. he's very athletic and explosive too, so that doesn't help me! ill record a few videos of my judo class tomorrow night and post them for ya.

good bout, sucks to have a first points to win situation and be standing with a judo guy, but nice job on the sweep for the win.

you seemed to have difficulty posturing up in his guard, was that cause his grip was so good?

can't really rip your game apart, cause I'm only a lowly (sp?) white belt, but I have tapped a judo brown belt via armbar at training, and it feels good ;)

Cheers! the sweep I used with the hand on the ankle and one foot hooking the leg, I think I learned that in my 2nd week of BJJ at JKs SBG 3 years ago, it's been thought to me by a few others since - it's worked well for me since the beginning.

The way the matches usually work, if there's no submission and level points after 5min there is 1min of overtime, first score wins.If there is no score, the ref has to award the match to the most offensive player.

    Sweet match dude!

Yeah, I train no-gi 50% of the time, I love the two, my preference changes every month! I was disappointed about no taking the back, looking at the vid, I looks like I just froze and held on when it was there for the taking. It strange that you say I have good conditioning, I'm not really known for it! I'm one of the few at my gym that doesn't do anything extra outside of BJJ, (Im also one of the very few that likes a pint at the weekend),. Anyway I think the conditioning was actually just extra will power - I was shagged during and after the match. I had been reading "A season on the mat" that week and it really seemed to motivate me. http://www.amazon.com/Season-Mat-Gable-Pursuit-Perfection/dp/0684847876

I'd love to see them! Judo guys and wrestlers always feel a lot different than a BJJ guy - I'm always blown away by their base and explosiveness, plus their will to win. BTW, do you post on another famous site under your initials???

Yeah, it was his grip and general strength, plus my guard passing is not what it should be, I rely on the other guy to attack in order to pass, with is not generally the best plan.

    Thanks for the feedback!

you should come to the bjj competition in SBGN northside next month for more fights with brown belt judo guys.

what exactly were you trying to do in it? It makes no sense to anyone unfamiliar with judo/BJJ match rules

I was trying my best to win!
The main objective is to get a submission and finish the match ASAP, the second ojective would be to get as many points as possible. Here are the rules, I *think* they are fairly standard BJJ rules:

    Aye, I'm JOB. :)

Here's a video as promised, but none of the resident black belts were there tonight. God a good run off one of the lads from a local MMA gym though in the last match.

Good video. Not that im an expert but i think you'd have a lot more success with your tai otoshi (sp?) if you committed 100% to the throw. At 5.14 you back out of it when your set up was good.

Thanks, I agree.. Although I remember when throwing he didn't seem to be going, although I can see now that he would of if I had of committed more. I was actually trying to bring his base down lower for a koshi-guruma like the one in my second match. I definately need to commit more in my throws. I think it's an energy saving thing I do so I don't over-exert myself unless I know I have the throw..

Cheers for the vid JOB. It looks like you have a great group of training partners there. Noone is going balls out and everyone always looking to execute a learned technique.

Stand up grappling can be really exhausting and unproductive if training partners go 100% and don't want to "play". I've only got to do 'proper' judo randori once. A 155lb canadian champ (champ at that time) had a seminar at out club once. It had the same kind of feel as rolling with a BJJ BB.

BTW - do you also do BJJ ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

I haven't trained BJJ in about 6 months I'd say.. Tbh, I rarely train BJJ.. I pop up once or twice once in a blue moon. I'm happy at the moment with judo - it's enjoyable to train. Everyone at the club is cool - theres a range of all sizes and skill level so it brings out the best in me (or worst :P) - and yeah, judo can be very tiring!
