Handhelds have far far longer life-spans than traditional consoles. I would say both have 3-4 yrs left in them at least before next model is due.

The Gameboy was around for nearly 15 yrs in one shape or another.

Well since Sony just released the PSP Slim & Lite there's not going to be anything new from them soon. There are rumors that Nintendo might release a new model DS but it won't be a new console, just lighter overall and bigger screens. But that rumor has been around since last E3.

I'd say you won't see a new handheld on the market from Ninty or Sony until sometime in Late 2009. Just a guess, but if one was announced towards the end of this year it would be middle to late 2009 before it would hit the market.

Sales of the DS and PSP are still incredibly strong and not likely to fall any time soon. Don't expect a new console any time soon.
