I'd prefer a box with three tuners. Hate not being able to record more then one channel at a time. I'd even settle for standard def, with HDMI connectors.

I think the problem with HD for UPC will be content. At the moment Sky seem to control it all and they charge an arm and leg for it. Is it really worth it?. I'm still not sold on the whole HD thing maybe for gaming yeah, but normal TV no. I feel its like something being rammed down your throat you need this and you will live a better life kinda thing. Maybe I would feel different when I own a HDTV. Which I will be buying soon to go with my xbox. I would prefer other things from UPC first VOD, three tuner DVR bigger hard drive and faster BB with a much bigger cap but that just me.

They should release a HD box with added functionality (3 tuners etc.) there is no rush for HD content, once the box is rolled out they could gradually bring it on stream.

I'd love to see UPC get something like the PACE TDC850(link below). Bit over kill with 4 tuners.

looks good, but i doubt they would get something this advanced when they do eventually roll out the HD. this would be a box we could get in like 2030 going on UPC:eek:

I wrote an article on HDTV before Christmas (which hasn't appeared in print yet).

UPC were very sketchy about an exact date but if I recall correctly they were simply saying Q2 2008, or something along those lines.

They did say that the HD box due to be used is already on the market in Holland and the Czech Republic and it would be a triple-tuner device.

UPD have HD boxes, and have had them for years

    Also

UPC's HD content has nothing to do with sky. They are an independent operator. Whether or not they choose to purphase HD content is up to them

Yes dear, not a lot of use when they don't provide them in Ireland though.

    It was in reponse to
They should release a HD box

I was merely pointing out that UPC have them and they are released. No reference to location was made "dear"

How does that even help in the slightest? We are talking about UPC Ireland. Surely when I wrote "UPC should release a HD box" this was obvious. If I say UPC should up the speed of their Broadband are you going to tell me they have 20mbps in Netherlands?

The reason it helps is because it answered the question.
Maybe the question was too vague, maybe my reply was to specific.

UPC are relatively new to Ireland, I was working under the assumption that not everybody reading the thread would be as well versed in UPC products are you apparently are. Rather than the next person coming along and saying
yeah man, UPC are so behind the times, they should design a HD box!
I was attempting to pre-empt the question and prevent the would be poster from being slammed.
Just because you consider in irrelevant, does not mean that every other individual would consider it so
are you going to tell me they have 20mbps in Netherlands?
No, this isn't a broadband thread. No but I think I see what your trying to get at. See my first point and my justification for posting that UPC already have HD boxes.

here's a humdinger for you, did you ever think that maybe your UPC is already a HD box?

Fair enough but if anything the reply wasn't specific enough. "UPC have a HD box available in NL" would have helped.

Now there's a question I don't quite get. If you asking have I wondered if my current UPC box a HD box the simple answer is that I know it isn't. It has no HD output.

But don't assume that Sky would be prepared to allow a competitor access to its hd services even if upc were prepared to pay the price.Virgin cable have made a similar accusation in the uk. Most hd channels currently available are sky owned/run/contracted.

Sure, again, I wasn't specific enough in what I meant. And your reason is perfectly valid - no visible connector - no HD.

What I meant was whether the box has the ability to decode HD, as in the software, processor, motherboard etc inside. I was being too literal. (I usually am - see all previous posts ha ha :) )

Indeed, I wouldnt expect sky to allow anyone to access their content. They (newscorp) do the same with their tangible goods too - hardware, software as well as content. It's almost all exclusive.

Originally, UPC HD content included the likes of National Geographic. There was a second channel but I can't remember what it was.

Discovery HD? Or is that run by Sky? BBC HD and Channel 4 HD should be plausible for UPC to obtain, would they?

If I'm not mistaken, BBC etc will make those HD channels available freely on satellite so there probably wouldn't be much of a market for UPC to overload their cable networks with that stuff. I'm sure the commercial driver would be the sport. If I were Sky I would insist that a HD solution comes with proper encryption before selling on the content so that everyone can't receive Sky's premium content for free on cable, as is currently the case.
