Suggest a career for me...

Okay so pretty much as the title says...

I'm 24 years old and I have an arts degree (English Lit/Drama) and have just dropped out of my MA in English cos it was rubbish and I don't want to be an academic. Basically I have no idea what to do with myself. I'm writing a novel but even if I do ever get published its going to take a while and if it doesn't work out I need a career to fall back on.

I am bored out of my mind working in shops, which is what I've been doing for years now. I don't want to work in an office because it would be horrendously soul destroying, ditto call centre etc. I just have no interest in that kind of job.

The other problem is that I have a very mild form of Asperger's so I'm not the most sociable of people. And while I am perfectly able to make an effort with people at the start, i absolutely hate doing it and find it very difficult in the long term.

I'd like to have some sort of job where I am left to get on with things by myself and I don't have to have loads of contact with people if I don't want to.

The other problem with menial jobs is that I'm very clever and need something to challenge me without being majorly stressful.

Tough, yes? What do I do? I'm thinking of starting an Open University degree in Maths in September becasue I have always been interested in it. This would take years to complete though and I need to be earning money for the next few years.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Sub-editing for a newspaper? This involves tidying up stories that come in, fitting them in the allocated page space (so you might have to do a lot of "cutting", all the while ensuring you don't lose any important points), writing headlines, captions etc.

if that was a one year course and you dropped out with a few months left i cant help but feel that was a mistake

if you havnt tried it you might be suprised. when i was starting in a call center/office job iw as sure id hate it but i found it was quite doable and enjoyed being able to impress the hell out of team leaders etc with my work ethic but then i did have a set date for when id be finished so im not 100% sure i could do it forever. i do know i have 3 years experience in an area seperate to what i would really love to do to fall back on if it dosnt all work out as i plan

    self employed? free lance journo?

im not sure if you mean the jobs your doing right now or office jobs or whatever but weather or not your going to be challenged is going to be directly related to how much you want to progress no matter what job your in if your just coasting along and are bored you can always ask for more / different work or responsibilities

sure why not but cruising from one course to the next is not oging to help decide what you ultimately want to do.

in conclusion what im trying to say is it is completely in your hands and there is no1 else to blame if it goes wrong(not saying your looking for anyone to blame). get a job if you dont like it move to the next in a different field if you dont like it move on etc etc if you have a good business idea then starting your own businees will give you complete control of your working conditions
