Replacing Passport

I need to get my passport replaced in time for May/June. I'm signing up for the J1, and have been warned that the US Embassy is picky enough with passports in bad order. Up until a while ago, before I had the age card, I used to bring it out most nights. As a result, it's got a few dog ears, stains etc.

So, can it be replaced for this reason, or does it have to be damaged/lost/stolen?

And where can it be done, postage/heading up to offices?

you could just rip it and go in to offices and get it replaced.they will post it out in under 2 weeks. you have plenty of time.
