very keen on picking one of these up.

2 questions though. scouting the web I see a lot of people having difficulty getting a Wii to output properly through it, anyone know how to set it up properly?

secondly, where the hell can you get one for a reasonable price! just under €600 seems to be the norm over here, but in the US it's down to under $400, that's an *insane* price difference...

The base price in the UK is 399 GBP for which some suppliers will charge 15 - 20 GBP to ship.

PM if you need their details.

The 605 is £399.95 on richersounds.ie, based in Belfast. They charge £10 shipping. I bought my 905 from them and they shipped it to my house in Dublin. No problems. Haven't put my Wii through it yet as I'm awaiting a HDMI cable. Gonna try to connect Wii to Onkyo via component and then try to get it to work via the existing HDMI connection to my TV. I think I read somewhere that it can be done that way although I saw something in manual about having to have similar type connections i.e. because Wii is connected to amp via component, then it has to also connect to TV via component. I'll let you know how I get on.

with the 605, you connect the Wii (with composite or component) and then the 605 will output that signal through the HDMI output upscaled to 576p.

same on the 905, except the 905 will upscale to 1080p.

Just spoke to Richer Sounds Belfast and they will do the 605 for 350 + 9.99 GBP shipping to Dublin.

From what I have seen over on avforums, around the £350 mark seems to be the best deals going, plus with the present exchange rate, not bad at all ! :)

I paid €600 for mine in Munich and I'm very happy with it. I have it connected to a set of Canton CD202's. Amazing sound :D.

I'm sure the neighbours would disagree though.

Hi the corpo, just wondering if you read of wii issues here or elsewhere? We were just about to buy one and will need a wii to work through it. Please advise. Thanks. BTW Komplett seem to have the best prices on them at the moment. Agree price diff is insane...might be worth importing but you'd prob get stung for customs from US bringing price right back up again.

Could someone tell me, if I connect a BD/HD player running 1080/24p through this, will it allow for a direct thru-put, or will it do it's own processing and potentially degrade the picture?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,027 ✭✭✭eddiem74

From what I know it allows for pass through, see page 24/25 of the manual.

For HDMI ( or any video feed ) it will allow direct passthrough , so no alteration of the picture. Analog feeds are subject to the usual analog rules though , so there are extra connections and as with all analog feeds some very slight alteration is inevitable , however whether or not its at a level thats visible is another thing.

Any source that your using the amp to upscale though , is clearly being processed by the amp and therefore altering the signal , you'll have to experiment here with which one looks the best , for instance if you have a flat screen HDTV and a PS3 , then all the devices are scaling to some extent , ideally , one scaler should be used , not all of them ,

For instance the PS3 can upscale , which can be fed through the onkyo which itself can upscale , and then to the TV which again may scale. Altogether altering the content 3 times. ( if they are all set to scale that is)

You'd need to experiment here on what way the content looks best , for instance , PS3 upscaling , pass-through on the amp , etc. ...... but thats for each user to decide which way they want to go.

Great amp/receiver for the money I think , Im loving it so far!

    Cheers guys.
    Think I'll go for one.

And now for a decent (but cheapish) 5.1 system.

Edit: Actually, here's something I just thought of.
I already have a Bose Lifestyle 35 at home. The amp section doesn't have enough connections for me anymore, hence me looking for a new amp.
Does anyone know of a way to connect the Bose speakers and sub to an external amp? Is there like an adaptor or something?
This would obviously save me a good few hundred quid on new speakers, plus save me having to rewire!

    Hi,

Today I purchased the Onkyo 605 from Richersounds.ie for 350GBP and 9.99GBP delivery. I ordered it today and they expect to have them in stock in black (silver very hard to get anywhere) next week.

I got a PM from Gabby_11 but I'll respond in this thread to help others. The question was how to get that price. There stores in the UK do prices matches and I read on avforums that hifix were doing the product for 340 delivered. I sent there Belfast branch that price and asked will they match it. The checked with hifix who it turns out don't deliver to Ireland (you can arrange your own courier). But a pleasant surprise was they offered me the product at the above price. I paid today and hope others can get that deal. Works out way cheaper than any other option I could find.

    Hi Majj,

Congrats!! One of the best deals around at the moment, I would say, and with the exchange rate also working in your favor, nice ! :D Plus nice to know in case of any issues, a return, etc.. will be a little simpler and worst case only a drive away !

    Good Luck & enjoy !

Hi Eddie, thanks for that. Yes, I think I have got a great deal and can go find them if there are problems! So with a set of KEF 3005SEs on the way and linking to a HTPC, we will have a very similair setup. Thanks for your help in the past and expect the questions to come flooding :) My first separates set up too and can't wait.

    Thanks!

Has anyone tried to set up the 605 with Magnet's fibre to the home?

I have it under the current config- The set top box has digital coax out and then a scart.

The coax is connected to the Coax 2 and assigned then the scart is run through a philips DVD recorder. then through to the TV.

I have tried to use the HDMI output and use the TV as a monitor but I cant seem to do it. I am only getting sound. Any ideas?

    Thanks Del

The coax is connected to the Coax 2 and assigned then the scart is run through a philips DVD recorder. then through to the TV.

So you have coax to 605, set-top box to DVD via scart, and then DVD to TV via scart or ? With this set-up do you have picture or sound ?
I have tried to use the HDMI output and use the TV as a monitor but I cant seem to do it. I am only getting sound. Any ideas?

So here, you have coax to 605, set-top box to DVD, and then DVD to AMP via HDMI and then Amp to TV via HDMI or ??? You have sound here from the Amp I am assuming via coax connection?

Please help provide a few more specifics.

the digital coax only carries audio. you ned to connect the magnet box to the amp for video, use one of these http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/81V3BZWSMCL._AA280_.gif
for video and then the coax for audio (like you currently have) and then assign the video and audio to the same input.

then do the same for the DVD recorder, and then you'll get the HDMI outputting everything.

the way you have it at the moment is audio only, no video inputs.

Thanks - the only problem I have is that the video out from the STB is a specialised type of S-Video/DIN to Scart.

So I presume I have to go and get a scart to phono adaptor to go straight into the 605.

Or use Svideo from the DVD Recorder to 605. As the audio is already linked to the 605 by optical output.

    I hope that is correct.

The info I have about this special din was from Harvey Normans- doing my own investigation it looks like a std Mini Din. Therefore I should be able to get a Mini Din to SVideo and that should do it. Connect that upto the 605 using the same cbl/sat input and hopefully it will be sorted.

    Thanks
