I've never had mine go under 500Mb. Usually idles around 600, though it depends on so many things that it could vary a lot from one setup to another.

So yeah, it's normal for Vista to be doing that. You should think about upgrading the RAM at some stage, 1Gig is pretty low for Vista. There's some tweak guides out there to help make the most of your memory.

Agree I have 1 GB and its 50-55% typically, at rest.

I have 2GB of RAM, it is usually somewhere in the middle (i have one of those things that show usage in my sidebar) whilst idling... But then when i start using apps like internet, music, word etc. it doesn't really jump...

I think vista is designed to consume whats available. So If you have nothing running it will hog the available RAM but if you start running lots of other apps then vista will reduce the amount of memory it cosumes, to try and run in the background as it were. I think thats how it works anyway.

    qft

My understanding is that unlike XP VISTA doesn't swap out stuff till you need the space.

On older versions of windows you could edit the boot.ini with MAXRAM or BURNMEMORY settings to see what it would be like with less ram , but not much point in VISTA
