I'm think of buying an Audi A4 1.9TDI and bringing it in from the UK. I'm thinking of a 2004 reg and I'm told the exchange rate is pretty good right now.
But, if I wait til July will the new VRT bands apply, since it's the cars first registration in the country?

yes they will apply from July onwards. Get it done beforehand. I bought a Landcruiser up in the north on Saturday, this was about 11.00am and I was the 3rd person from the south who bought a vehicle from the guy that morning! Got a nice VRT bill coming my way next week!

VRT for a landcruiser is definitely going up but I think the VRT on a 1.9 TDI A4 will be coming down, so I was going to wait til July and save some cash....unless I missing something?

The VRT rate for the A4 maybe coming down - I've no idea but the OP's question was "if I wait til July will the new VRT bands apply" - which they do.

+1. Wait till July to register it. Cheaper VRT and Road tax remember.

I know the VRT thing has been done to death but i cant seem to find an answer to this particular question on any other thread...

If i go over to England next week, buy my car and bring it home now can i drive it on English plates or leave it sitting at home in the garage until July and then have it registered to take advantage of the new VRT rates?

Or will they look at the paperwork see that i bought the car in January and charge me by the old VRT rates?

@Fozzie : Technically you are supposed to VRT your car on the next working day from your arrival back in Ireland. However I don't see anything wrong with parking it up and not using it. When you go to VRT the car, all they want is the V5 form, parts 1 to 8 - nowhere on 1-8 will it mention when you brought the car into the country.

I got an interesting letter from the Department of the Environment the other day. Apparently they've only been gathering CO2 emissions data on cars from May 2005 onwards, which is part of their rationale for not allowing existing cars to be put on the new system. So how they're going to work imports older than that into this new system is going to be interesting.

Every car manufactured since about 2001 has to legally have a COC (Certificate of Conformity) which includes the CO2 emissions data. They can work from this as far as I know.

Not according to Gormley's private secretary they can't  Anyway I'll stop being political, I already managed to get one thread devoted to that, just wanted to raise the point since it seemed relevant to this thread too.

They use this for determining new cars' CO2 emissions. So there is no excuse for them not to get the CO2 data on anything from 2001 on. And it wasn't like cars before this were that different, if they tried at all they could cover plenty of other cars as well.

Making me confused now. I thought is was the annual motor tax that will be applied to imports according to CO2 emmisions after July, but that VRT would still be applied according to the market price in Ireland. Although it does sond like mixing two systems.

    Correct.

Half correct. The VRT will still be based on the OMSP of the car here in Ireland but the new VRT rate (%) catagory will be determined by the car's Co2 level.

Diesels and hybrids will benefit the most from the new system.

In other words if importing a diesel or hybrid wait until at least 1st July. If importing a petrol car, in most cases do it before July to stay on the existing system.

    Thanks for clearing that up.
