Howdy folks, I'm doing a bit of research about violence in sport (the legal side of things) and I was wondering would any of you know of any cases where wrestlers have been prosecuted for violence that occurs in-ring?

I know its definitely a rarity and wrestlers are probably said to consent to everything that goes on in the ring but I'm just curious if there's any well-known cases out there?

Jerry Lawler was up on a charge of assault last year. From what I remember, he played on the idea that it was all part of the show and got a way with it. That's all from memory though so I could be wrong.

There are a few cases, I can only think of one right now though. Last year at a Memphis wrestling show Jerry Lawler punched a wrestling manager in the face. The manager filed a lawsuit against him and Jerry was found not guilty: http://www.pwheadlines.com/WWE_News/verdict_reached_on_jerry_lawler_corrente_lawsuit.shtml

There was also a case where Mick Foley, Terry Funk and ECW got sued by a fan because he allegedly got burned at a show. Not sure if that's the sort of thing you're looking for or if it's a wrestler suing that you want

Which reminds me, a 16 year old guy once wrestled on an ECW show, telling them he was 18. He got cut real bad but everything was fine after the show. A few months later he decided to sue them

EDIT: It was actually three years after the match: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erich_Kulas

There has been tons of occassions when wrestlers have crossed the line and committed what would be considered assault, going beyod what is consented to, both inside and outside the ring. However, there exists amongst wrestlers a gentleman's agreement not to sue other wrestlers for assaults on them, as it's seen to break the backstage 'code', so to speak. The Jerry Lawler case was an exception to that rule, and the case itself was thrown out.

Oh....and when I saw the title of this thread, I thought you were talking about this:

Don't think he has ever been prosecuted but my god New Jack has done some nasty **** in his time. I remember seeing a video where he openly admitted that he was trying to kill someone when he was throwing them off scaffolding. What a cnut!

Was that Vic Grimes that got killed by new jack?

    No.

Vic Grimes was the chap Jack threw off a forty foot scaffolding, intentionally trying to botch the spot and have Grimes land on the ring post. Jack did this in retaliation for Grimes boasting that he previously 'hurt' Jack.

Holy crap that's bloody insane! There any links to video or articles about that? I never heard about it before (sorry for taking the thread off topic for a minute :o)

Apparently Grimes was begging New Javck not to go ahead with the spot as he had last second doubts. If Im not mistaken the show had to be stopped altogether after this happened.

New Jack is a dangerous prick. He should never be booked, ever.

Not sure about this one, but I know Perry Saturn legit beat the crap out of a local wrestler at a WWE house show a few years back. The local guy tried to get a shoot win out of nowhere, which Saturn took obvious exception to and went nuts. Injured the guy pretty bad I think I read.

I remember watching that, it was on Heat. The guy threw Perry out of the ring and he landed on his head. Perry went stiff with him after that, either because he was pissed off or because he'd been knocked dizzy

EDIT: http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=JP085eYK4Nw I was wrong, the guy just messed up a couple of moves on Perry. Don't think he ever took action though

Holy sh1t, was the guy alright?!

In this one he actually admits on camera that he tried to kill him! The fcuker should be done for attempted murder if it wasn't an angle!

He got tangled up in the ropes right?

    Didnt he die?

Yes, he got caught in the ropes. No, he didn't die.

Unless Im mistaken this is how moppy was born.

Bradshaw(before the whole bull spit JBL gimmick)took acception to Saturns actions and legit battered/concussed him in a match to teach him a lesson.

Saturn took on the mental patient gimmick after this.

I wouldn't be at all shocked if New Jack was talking rubbish to hype himself. Just like he talks rubbish about having killed four people in Beyond the Mat. He is a scumbag though.
The worst incident I can think of is from Have A Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks, where Foley talks about something that happened at a previous IWA (I think) show. Two guys went into business for themselves after a match, and powerbombed an unwilling opponent onto a bed of nails.
Does anyone know any more about that incident?

I'm certain that that involved Leatherface, aka Corporal Kirschner in the WWF. I think that match happened just after he'd been released from prison for assaulting a fan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Spear Little bit about it there

New Jack is a prick, not to mention one of the worst wrestlers ever, jumping off balconies and stabbing people with screwdrivers isnt wrestling,id love to see someone stiff the **** out of him in the ring as payback for all the people he really hurt with his stupid stunts

I read somewhere that the Ultimate Warrior tried to lift a jobber over his head to do his finisher but ended up grabbing him by the balls and lifting him him up that way...forcefully. Don't know if the guy sued though, lol.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erich_Kulas

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perry_Saturn - smacked around a jobber for botching a move

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Holly - smacked the crap out of Rene Dupree over speeding tickets, etc on a car under Holly's name

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Kirchner - legitemately tried to do nasty **** to another wrestler

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Heffron - JBL smacked him around at an ECW PPV

There are also other numerous incidences of wrestlers taking "liberties in the ring" - however I must point out that Perry Saturn has redeemed himself for his unselfish act of saving a women from being raped, etc
In April 2004, Satullo was shot three times in the neck with a .25 caliber handgun during an attempted rape which Satullo interfered and stopped, suffering severe damage to his C-5, C-6, and C-7 vertebrae. Satullo only learned of this after he visited a physician and complained of burning sensations in his neck, originally attributing the impact to a punch from behind. After having steel plates and screws inserted into his neck, Satullo returned to the ring on September 17, 2004, and continued to receive epidural treatment.
