    How necessary is this procedure?
And what sort of cleaning should take place between shots?
    Will accuracy be affected greatly?

    Thanks

If its 22 rimfire, just clean it well before you start shooting, it doesn't need run in. I clean after every few hundred rounds although some never clean their barrel.

Cleaner barrels shoot tighter groups once you get your clean barrel lubed again with a few sighters
