    Hi,

does anyone use the Focusrite Saffire LE audio interface on a Mac running Leopard?

I'm thinking that the Saffire LE is the AI for me, but I just did a bit of googling to ensure it's Leopard compatible.

So does anyone have one running with Leopard without issue?

I believe Leopard has some kernel panics associated with the Saffire LE when some actions are done when memory allocations are matching....or something.

Oh and I suppose, if you run a Sapphire LE, do you like it?

    Thanks,

    AlanD

    Hi,
The focusrite AIs use the Apple firewire driver which would make me stay WELL away from it.
I used to have a Yamaha i88x mlan interface that used the Apple driver and there were CPU spikes and a little demon called random offset, where every time you launch logic the recording delay would be different.
When changing interfaces I looked at the Apogee ensemble and the RME fireface800. When I did a bit of research I found out that the Apogee uses the Apple driver and went with the Fireface. Sure enough the ensemble had the random offset problem. I don't know if this has been fixed yet, but bear in mind that anything using Apple's own firewire driver is at the mercy of Apple and they have much bigger priorities than this.
I would advise getting something where the drivers are written by the manufacturer. RME is the best I have used but Metric Halo and MOTU are also highly regarded. Any of these may be more than you have budgeted for but would be worth it in the end.
If you are still unsure, read this thread on the Apple forum re the Focusrite

    Thanks for the reply...

Will those ASIO drivers work on it? note - I know nothing about ASIO.

I guess it's not the news I was hoping for. It looks like it's a decent AI and fits within what I can afford. Problem is, I can't afford anything better.

I had originally looked at the Presonus Firebox, but ruled it out for some reason. I liked the Saffire LE because the sound quality was excellent in comparison to other similarly priced AI's.

That thread you posted, that's why I posted here. Although I have read of people using it with no issues on Leopard
