i'm going backpacking through thailand, malaysia and singapore and looking for a decent camera. ideally it should be compact. i would also like a decent zoom feature and anti blur. my budget is roughly under 300 euro. anybody got any recommendations? which manufacturers are generally best when it comes to digital cameras?

    I'd suggest this:

    See review here:

Make sure you buy a few high capacity SD memory cards. I'd suggest you buy them here:

    Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony, Olympus...Panasonic.

I hear some of the Pentax low end dSLRs are weatherproofed and come with built in image stabilisation...maybe a second hand one will cost around 300 euro.

cheers. i was just looking at the canon a570. how does this compare with the a720?

The A570 is another excellent camera. The A720 has more megapixels (8 as against 7.1) but the difference is marginal. You can't go wrong whichever you choose.

Not really a compact but I used a Fujifilm S9500 when backpacking around Australia and thought it was great. Works like an SLR but since it was a bridge camera I didn't have to worry about dust getting into it. It's been replaced by the S9600 which is supposed be just as good.
