from the Botanic Garden

Julie persuaded me to go to the Botanic Garden today, and succeeded largely because I couldn't go to Powerscourt yesterday. I don't, as a general rule, do stuff like this, so in line with one of my ambitions cum resolutions for the year, I was way outside my comfort zone, and also, since I don't do this sort of stuff, I'm woefully not equipped for it...

this was taken with the Canon kitlens. I realise that it's very much going to be a subjective thing because it's a little extreme, but one of the key components of photography as far as I'm concerned is experimenting, and not being afraid to make mistakes, and above all else, to do what you do because you want to do it that way, not because anyone else tells you to do something this way.

I realise that it sounds like I'm very defensive about this, that I'm almost setting myself up to be trashed about it...but I'm genuinely interested to get opinions on it. It was exposed this way deliberately before anyone pops up and talks about the exposure. I'm more interested in the immediate impact - almost as simple as "do you like it" or "don't you like it". I know mostly when I post C&Cs it is to see if I can get a solution to some technical issue I have...in this case it's just a gallery shot, looking for reactions rather than technical critique.

    I persuaded you? :)

Since I spotted the little branch at the bottom I've had a hard time not being drawn to it, would you be against by principle the prospect of a quick healing brush dot on there?

I like the overall composition and the bokeh, it has a lovely fresh feel I think. It maybe loses a bit of that with the heavier shadows on the bottom so you can't see the green & purple. It's very twirly dancy flower creature... to me at least!

Just been on your Flickr trying to view a larger one - I can't really see much (though I suspect that's my monitor..). I like it a lot actually, although I have to say I prefer the other one on your flickr stream - where its just the squiggle, no background detail. I'm very much in a 'nothing really in the frame but the subject itself' mood these days. Also, I'm kinda not sure about the little branch in focus in the bottom - can't decide if its just pulling my eye for no reason or if its earthing the other one?

I do think it works better as a graphic image though - the plainer cropped one.

ps - you missed a good laugh yesterday :)

    Ah, wasn't that hard.

ThOnda has suggested some surgery off the top. I may take a scissors to it tomorrow when I have had a change to think it over somewhat, top and bottom.

Thonda always wants to take the scissors to everything

My intuition agrees with a bit less space at the top but it'd be a shame to lose those nice little dark bits in the top corners. Putting the main subject on the third, well, it feels so right but I'm rebelling against it! You must resist!

Oh my god, I should have been quite :o

I looked at it few times again and I agree with the bookeh - artificial in case of crop. And the blue smudge in the right bottom corner could be put into the colour of background. And the branch at the bottom could be stamped...

OK, I am going to find some photo to process and post, just to avoid getting mark "the looser who always talks about scissors and has no new photos in his flickr"...

    Edited: Two pictures added! ;)

having just watched a film called Alien v Predator on C4, the shape in the picture reminds me of one of the aliens

    - does that make this picture "out of this world" ! (sorry I know v.v.v.v corny)

is that the sky in the background? if so it might have been a really nice pic if the weather was a bit better, i think it needs colour., although dont take my advice, im just a fan of brightly coloured pics.,lol, :D
How many turned out for the meeting then? I would have liked to go but i was too knackered to move, and are there anymore meets planned?
