    Has anyone bought from here?
    http://stores.ebay.ie/Hi-TechDirectIreland
Was thinking of driving up from Dublin city centre....not sure if they sell like that though and posting will take too long.

They will send it out by courier.
Since they're a Hong Kong based company, I doubt they have a customer desk in Ireland. If you'd bought & paid for it today, you'd have it by Tuesday.

Sorry to hear about that... will keep an eye out for suspiciously cheap 400D on the second hand market.

    Was it insured?

I misplaced a really nice fountain pen once (Xmas present) - bought another so that the parents wouldn't get mad at me (I only had it less than a month!)

Let us know the serial number if you have it so then when anything comes on the market we can always keep an eye out for it.

you wouldn't notice at all if it was on ebay, the price of things on there is dirt cheap already

Oh and of course, bad luck on losing the cam.

hey - bad luck on losing the camera. Been incapacitated a few times with a camera, thankfully i haven't bashed or lost any.

You could take a look on the Buy & Sell, theres a few EOS 400Ds and some 20/30 Ds, would they notice if you suddenly had a 30 D? might you be able to explain it away that you traded the gift for a more improved model?
Only thing about the B&S you might be buying your own camera - that'd be the pits!
Hong Kong is an option too, and take a look on boards adverts
    good luck with it anyway!

But combine that with a serial number...

Anyway, if the thief is smart enough to use ebay then the OP probably has very little chance of recovering the camera.

Was thinking more of the local Irish buy and sell sites...

Erm......don't know it, suppose it's on the warranty?
Finding it is another thing, I live in one cluttered flat/
    lol

Oh no, that's some rotten luck :( I do hate to suggest the obvious, but I assume you rang/called in to/harrassed the hell out of the venue? You'd never know, some honest soul may have come across it - if I found it, I'd hand it in...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

So would I (partly because I'm a Nikon user :p) but if I were in the same situation I'd hope for someone honest to hand it in too (maybe check the local Garda station too?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,319 ✭✭✭sineadw

Ah that's terrible.. Yep - check with the venue - I would've handed it in too. You never know.

620 in Argos last week though, and a friend of mine bought one in Conns last week for 500 second hand. Still had the original receipt in the box - dated Christmas eve just gone. You might be lucky there or Camera Exchange.

    Argos catalogue says €675.
Still cheapest I've seen yet though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭AnimalRights

    Conn's with EFS 18-55 lens €699
Halls with EFS 18-55 lens €699
Argos with EFS 18-55 lens €675
Dublin camera exchange with EFS 18-55 lens AND 2gb mem card €679
Pixels with EFS 18-55 lens/ tarmac zoomster/2gb Lexar mem card and a case €739

I already have the camera bag!!!! It's just empty :o
Just need to check Gunn's tommorow now.

Phoned up Gunn's this morning and had a yap with the daughter who assured me she could beat the prices I quoted earlier in the thread from her main dealers, got it for €675 + 2gb mem card and also a wealth of information which I understood!!
Very happy with the service there and thanks to all who mentioned Gunn's in other threads.

actually, what's the legal situation with stumbling across an item someone else has obviously misplaced, and keeping it?

    *Not legal advice!*

But from what we've learnt in criminal law - it is not a crime for someone to "find" lost items. Ethically they should hand it into a Garda station and after one year can claim that item if no-one comes and claims it.

Theft is when you had the intention to steal and commit the act of taking... if either is missing (the intention and act) then the crime is not committed.

In fact if you honestly take someone's belonging without an intention to steal you are not legally liable either (taking the wrong suitcase at an airport). If you later open this suitcase, find out it isn't yours and decide to keep it - it gets a bit more grey - but as far as I know you're not liable either (as the mens rea and actus res did not occur at the same time).

If you find something then obviously you did not have the intention to steal. Thus legally you're not in trouble but ethically...

actually, what's the legal situation with stumbling across an item someone else has obviously misplaced, and keeping it?

A Garda answered this for me yesterday. If you know its not yours and you take it knowing its not yours then its quite clearly theft.

On Saturday, I misplaced an expensive item I had just bought in town and when I went back to where I left it it was gone and it hadn't been handed in. Thankfully, the person who took it made the totally stupid mistake of taking it from a place (car park) where there are over 50 CCTV cameras. Security were able to tell me that they had very clear footage of a (respectable-looking) person spotting the bag, looking around to see if the coast was clear and then taking the bag to the boot of their car and driving off. They told me they were also able to check back on the entrance barrier camera ("smile you're on camera)" and have a very clear picture of the person *and* most importantly they can provide the car reg details to the gardai.

Lets just say I've kick started the wheels of justice and the person should be getting a little visit from our friendly guards quite soon... ;)

^ Hope you get your stuff back!

In your case - knowingly taking someone's stuff is obviously a crime. My comment only applied to genuine mistakes.

Back on topic, hope the OP gets a stroke of luck and their lost camera turns up!
