Problem finding gears...

    Hey all,

Last week I began to have some trouble getting from neutral into 1st or reverse, a loud grinding sound would accompany some attempts at this and I would just move back to neutral before either gear was fully engaged, take my foot off the clutch, go back on the clutch and try again until such time as I could find the gear without the grinding. On certain occasions I would have to try three or more times before finding the gear, other times there would not be a problem at all over the course of the drive. Also, I was finding it hard to get into 2nd gear occasionally, particularly if decelerating or braking hard. I drove up and back to Dublin from Galway over the weekend, and noticed the following additional problems: found it hard to move from 3rd to 4th or from 5th to 4th occasionally, particularly if I wasn't accelerating quickly (in the 1st instance) or decelerating quickly (in the 2nd instance). The problems moving into 2nd are gone but still get some wince-inducing grinding when moving into 1st when stopped.

Any ideas of what exactly is wrong? And if so what would repairing this entail / cost? Thanks :)
