    Hi all.

There's no real info about then on the Irish defence forces website. Are they combat engineers in the true sense? What do they get up to compared to normal infantry? What would it be like as a career path?

    thanks

I think you need an engineering degree to join the PDF engineers, but not for the RDF.

They do stuff like building/blowing up bridges, laying/sweeping mines and firefighting.

You'd need a real expert to elaborate though.

    I thought that was outlawed???

Oh and you dont need an engineering degree. That is to be commisioned in the engineers AFAIK. I am 87% sure.

And for the RDF engineers you do have to have an engineering degree for commission. I am 94% sure.

NONE OF THE ABOVE ^^^^^ IS TRUE.

If you join as an enlisted man/woman you'll undergo normal basic training like everyone else in the army, ie you'll pass out as an infantry soldier.

Then if your posted to an engineer unit you'll under a combat engineers course in the Curragh camp, but since I'm not an engineer I can't tell you too much more.

But you will cover stuff like mine clearance, bridge building, building defensive positions and everything else which comes with being a combat engineer.

After that your returned to your home unit and from there you'll under go further training according to what job your employed in.

Also as an engineer you'll get plenty of chances to serve oversea's since engineers are in high demand.

SO to be a commisioned officer in the RDF you need a degree but not for the PDF?

Apologies for that.I was considering joining the Engineers myself but was told by an ex PDF guy that they only take people with engineering degrees. he was in the artillery though.

Mairt, do you know if you need any sort of degree to enter as a cadet in the engineers?
Or would you have to work your way up,

No. To be a commissioned officer in the RDF Engineers you must have a "relevant" engineering degree (as I said ninty-odd% sure)

To be a commissioned officer in the PDF Engineers you dont need a degree to enter but you will have to actually get one before you start serving. (i.e. That will be the course of study you take up in Galway.) It does help if you already have a relevant degree though because in the interview you will have 10% added on top of what ever score you get.

Unless things have changed in the last few years, you don't need a degree to be an officer in an RDF engineer company. A friend of mine who was in the engineers did the officers course about 5 years ago & he didn't have a degree. There is (or was) such thing as a technical commission, where someone with a relevent engineering degree got promoted without having to do the course.

I've no idea about RDF officers and recruitment requirements, sorry.
