Actually a very good time to lay a new lawn, but make sure adequate ground preparation has been done and surface has been rolled and level.

    hi james.

No problem to lay turf at this time of year. just a couple of things. yes ground conditions must be correct.
    1. Rotavate & level the area well.
    2. make sure the turf is not continually saturated as this will result in the turf dieing off.

    Good luck.

    Get the wellies on!

How do I make sure of that? Lay a tarp if it gets really bad?

It's still a little bit early for laying turf, but a good time for the ground prep. Prepare the soil, get weed killer and leave for 2 weeks. Their is no growth in the grass at the moment and your turf will not bed in.

Another problem may be sourcing the turf due to the recent heavy rain. The supplier may not want to bring the machinery onto a waterlogged field.
Best leave it for another 2-4 weeks.

Whatever you do, buy the turf from a lawn supplier and not from B&Q

If it's too cold for growth, it's too cold for weeds to absorb weedkiller. During the current spell, using weedkiller as part of ground prep is probably less than useful. That said conditions will vary, but broadly good for rotovation etc, obviousily if ground is very wet, you postpone, but there are very good drying conditions during the wet spells and even if temperatures drop, once the turf has been carefully laid and rolled it doesn't matter if it takes an extra few days for turf to take/bed in.

Plenty are laying turf at the moment, but do agree supplies can be problematic during very wet spells.

OP - if you're preparing a large area, consider laying 8' x 4' plywood sheeting, better than builders boards especially during wet spells and the laying stages.
