The better half is having a problem with her car and looking for help with what might be the problem.

When the engine is cold the car doesn't take off in 1st gear sometimes.

When foot to the floor the car doesn't seem to have the kick. Like no power.

Going to ring the garage on Monday about it but like to know some idea whats to say the garage as neither know much about cars and don't want to be really ripped of.

I had something similar (1999 Cordoba). There seemed to be no power at all in the engine - battery was fine) and the engine wouldn't start. Had to keep flooring the accelerator for short periods, rest it and repeat. The car would eventually get going and then there would be no problem. It wouldn't cut out and it would start first time but no if it had been left overnight.

According to the mechanic there is a temperature sensor which prevents the engine starting in very cold conditions (mine was apparently reading -55 ) which can malfunction. He showed me how to unplug the thing until he got a replacement (took a couple of days) and the car started fine. Once the replacement was fitted everything was back to normal. Can't remember the exact cost but it wasn't too bad.

    Make/model/year/mileage/last service

Do you mean it's revving out but the power isn't getting to the wheels (clutch gone) or do you mean it has an engine problem where the engine doesn't rev up?? Does it splutter or mis-fire??

Get a mechanic to have a look at it.
We could guess that is this or that but better-off go to a garage that has all the tools available and can pin-point the issue in seconds.

    I am no expert (LEGALY)

But, from the sounds of your problem..

You could need a new clutch ..

I think you mean when the car is cold, its hard to take off in first. High revs, resulting in little movement. (cant see why when the car is cold, that its the problem)

Also, the putting the foot down and no power.

Short terms, the clutch is between the engine and the wheels (ie, driveshaft, gearbox, then diff) . Could be off the mark, but it sounds like a gearbox (clutch) problem.
