Paris where's the best place to stay?

Wonder if anyone could recommend a good hotel to stay in Paris. That's mostly central to attractions, reasonable and comfortable.

we stayed on place de republique few years back.In the 7th i think. it was a holiday inn so ur not getting any of the charm of a old french hotel. It was great cause there was around 6 or 7 different metro lines from the station 20 feet away. It was a nice hotel with big rooms(very unusual in paris) If you were staying for anymore than 5 or 6 nights I would recommend staying in an apartment. it works out way cheaper and lots more space also.
