Ok Friends pc got a blast of lighting last week and now will not boot up

there is a LED on the mobo, I have removed all the ram and the reseated the CPU also I have tried a normal PSU and still no joy

No Fans spin up or anything. I reckon this is a system board gone?

But if I buy one it could also be the CPU ??

I have found this web site and this barebones box for 299 ! Is this a better option?

    Not worth replacing imo...

Ankermann are good but you have to pay a €40 credit charge on top of the €299

Pc is very basic for €340, no os,cheap everything....

You can get a pretty good Core 2 Duo,Vista,Hdmi graphics Dell vostro pc for €420...

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E4500 Processor (2.20GHz,800MHz,2MB cache)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium - English
Base Warranty - 1 Year Business Hardware Support
    No 19" Wide Monitor
    1024MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x512]
160GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst™ cache
    128MB ATI® Radeon™ HD 2400 Pro graphics card
    16x DVD+/-RW & 16x DVD Drives
Dell™ Entry Quietkey USB Keyboard - UK/Irish (QWERTY)
Dell 2 Button USB Optical Mouse

    Or build it yourself

friend has a very tight budget, those Vostro are all ex VAT Priced ??

On Komplett the cheapest AMD kit is 248 and the cheapest Intel kit is €284 I would still need a suitable case and PSU after this

    What other options have i??

Does your friends system have a 56k modem in it? Or was it hooked upto a broadband router box when the lightening struck? IF theres a modem in it remove it and try powering on , if he was using an ethernet connection have a look at the motherboard and see is there a "Broadcom" chip near the network connection and check is it damaged. Had several cases like this in recently. It would be possible for him to claim it under his house insurance to cover the cost of the replacement system.

I have reset everything he was using NIC card for DSL and the DSL filter was blown apart with lighting

The modem has been removed and I can see any chip damage on the system board : (
