Directional antenna

There is a wireless network in the apartment complex I am staying in but I can only connect to it by the door, if I go into the bedroom or the sitting room I lose the signal.
I know there is a mini satellite dish/antenna that can "grab" the signal from where it is the strongest and then direct it somewhere else.
I did a search on this forum for a link to where I could get one but it didn't give me back anything.
I don't want to spend too much as I won't be staying in the apartment very long but it's a pain having to go out to the hall to use the 'net.
Edit: having googled it it seems maybe using a USB adapter might work better?
I have built-in wireless in the lappie but maybe it's reception range is too low.
