it's the perfect ultra portable/ travel laptop. It's tiny!

    eeepc3.jpg

It costs no more than €350 for a fully functioning laptop, the size of a book. You would have paid 1000-2000 Euro a few years ago for this sort of machine.

It has 512Mb RAM upgradable to a gig (2 gigs in the new models I think), it has a built-in 2mp webcam, a solid-state hard drive, which means everything loads much much faster. Two USB2 ports, wireless card, an ethernet port and a mini-pcie SD slot. It runs linux (no windows bloat), and is very nippy.

The main drawback at the moment, is the size of the screen and the resolution. The screen is only 7" (800x480) which is a bit limiting. It also has ugly borders around the edge, which house the speakers. This is the only reason I haven't bought one yet. There are rumours that the newer models are going to have an increased screen size (and increased price tag) so I'm holding out for this.

Also, because a Solid-State Harddrive is flash memory, you are limited to small harddrive space (It comes in 2Gb/4Gb models, with an 8Gb model on the way). This can be seen as a problem, but to be honest, you can buy high capacity external LaptopHDD's/USB Keys/SD Cards for peanuts these days,so it's a moot point in my eyes.

If you move around a lot, or carry a laptop around regularly, this is the perfect replacement. If you're sick of lugging a big hot laptop over to the couch to watch movies, this is a great replacement. Basically, if you like portability, the eeepc is a must.

I've been using my eeepc for a little over a week now and i think it's great, it's tiny but usable and cheap too. It's ideal for taking to college and wandering around the house as it's so light and small. You get used to the screen size quite quickly and it doesn't really bother me anymore. Whether the eeepc is better than a conventional laptop or not is really down to what you want in a laptop. If you want a laptop that'll spend 99% of it's time on a desk then obviously the eeepc is not the right one to go for, but if you want a umpc for college/travel, where you can browse the net and work on office docs or watch movies saved to a sd card then it's ideal. I love the eeepc

thanks Alan, i think ill wait until the new ones come out and see what the screen is like. can dvds be recorded and can it be connected to the tv

like alan said, it really depends on what you want from the laptop. Do you already have a desktop machine at home? Would you/Do you use a laptop in college/work. Do you travel a lot?

I can't imagine the eeepc working well as a main laptop/computer. I'd imagine typing on the small keyboard for any length of time can get tedious and the screen, while grand for internet etc, would be probably too small for multitasking.

I don't think a bigger screen has been officially confirmed, so be wary. A lot of people have been hearing rumors about it though, so hopefully it's is true.

It has a VGA-out connection, so you can connect it to your TV. Im not sure what resolution is upscales to though. it doesn't have a DVD player, so all CD media is out of the question
